Public Allies North Carolina

Public Allies North Carolina Public Allies North Carolina was one of the first expansion sites in the PA network. We at Public Allies North Carolina expect a great deal from our members.

Over the past 15 years we have built hundreds of partnerships with vital nonprofits in North Carolina and developed 193 young leaders who continue to be passionate change-makers and community advocates. The Allies (members) are diverse, dedicated, ambitious and committed to careers in public service. Our graduates have gone on to be executive directors, lawyers, community organizers, program manag

ers, public health administrators and professors, and they have all done so having had the Ally experience ─ an experience that is unlike any other. We conduct a comprehensive leadership series designed to prepare the Allies with the professional and personal skills for public sector jobs, and we do this by focusing on our community-centered core values: collaboration, integrity, asset-building, continuous learning, and inclusiveness.

Congratulations to Ryan Humphreys ( class of 2019!) who was offered a permanent position with our Operating Partner, The Institute.

"After leaving the Air Force in 2018, Ryan was looking for a new way to serve his community, using the skills he’d learned in his six years of service. Ryan job searched for a few months, but nothing seemed to be a good fit... Reading the description [for Public Allies], Ryan had a gut feeling that Public Allies was exactly where he needed to be."

Through lockdown induced re-centering and reflecting, Michaella Kosia (Public Allies North Carolina ‘19) made the brave choice to propel herself into the world of culinary arts.

“It was definitely an experience jumping into entrepreneurship,” Michaella says. “I don’t have entrepreneurs in my family. It was a lot of self-taught things, finding things out on my own, and trial and error. In my journey of defining myself, I’ve learned that I am very much an educator at heart and I implemented that in my business.”

“Awakening” is a spoken word piece by Rajah Satterwhite (Public Allies North Carolina ‘17):

I gotta full beat face
And a bigger waist
Tip-toeing in my block heels
Trying to cultivate hope so my block heals
Every night I stay plotting awake
These injustices too much, I don't know how much more we can take
Focusing on all the things
Nearly clipped my wings
So I find peace in my anger and rage
Will not let them become my cage
Turn into myself
Discovering new ways to appreciate and take care of myself
Cutting out western norms and reevaluating the value I gave them
Reivesting in the new system
Passing the mic to people who look like me
Uplifting those who want everyone to really be free
So I’m keeping my nose in the journals, research papers and books
Joining the networks of groups who know Diversity is more than how the org chart looks
Inclusion is more than offering a seat at your table
Community is standing in the gaps for those who are differently-able
Here, still, because Jella Mae Fuller prayed over a vision of me
It’s only fitting that I contribute to good trouble for generations that have yet to be.

(This piece is part of Public Allies' campaign to highlight voices of Black members, Alumni, staff, and partners throughout Black History Month.)
