"You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious, and hope can take on a life of its own," Michelle Obama. The Annual End of the Year Celebration has spanned over a decade. Students spent this past Friday saying goodbye to their classmates and teachers and hello to the summer with activities that ranged from volleyball, face painting and dancing, to jumping in the bounce house, and more! Even though the start of the summer vacation is an exciting time for students, the teachers feel bittersweet watching their students leave and head to a new school. Thanks to our teachers for planting the seeds of inspiration and preparing our students to exceed high expectations. Our students have finished the school year by reaching their academic goals. They are prepared for the new journey ahead. Remember you are Urban Day Pioneers. You will always be connected to this school. Best wishes to our students and staff as they start a new chapter in their life.

Our K5 students celebrated with their families, classmates and teachers with a chorus of creative motivational songs. Students were so proud of themselves and each other for all that they accomplished and learned throughout the year. Keep reading and exploring this summer. “There’s winning and there’s losing and in life both will happen. What is never acceptable to me is quitting,” Magic Johnson. This was Urban Day’s 16th Annual Student Vs Staff Basketball Game. From the moment you walked to the bleachers, you could feel the excitement in everyone. The energy that ran through the crowd just resonated in the cheers every time a point was scored. Though the teams both played passionately it was apparent that it was never truly about winning, but more about the bonding and entertainment of the game. In the end, one team must win and this year it was the students, 84-80. Urban Day students are winners in many ways, congratulations! Thanks to all the staff and students for participating in this exciting event.

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party,” Robin Williams. Urban Day students brought a lot of energy to their last Spring Musical program at both campuses! The gym was filled with eager parents ready to listen to their favorite Jackson 5 hits and other great artists’ songs. Students performed many great tunes, including: ABC, Powerful, See You Again, Dancing Machine, Change is Gonna Come. Their talent shined in two dance performances, a skit depicting a kid president, a surprise solo from Ms. Simms and much more! The program ended with staff, students, and parents joining together singing the song “Smile” by Kirk Franklin. Thanks to Ms. Betty Lea, our Musician in Residence, staff and students! Your teamwork made Urban Day’s last Spring program memorable.

“The man who doesn’t read has no advantage over the man who can’t read,” Mark Twain. The Rotarians are back! The Rotary Club of Milwaukee plants the seeds of inspiration by bringing their Reading is Fundamental program to our Urban Day students. The Rotarians talked to every class about how reading made a difference in their lives. Every student chose a new book for their home library. Our students showed their appreciation with hugs, good conversations, and bright smiles. Thanks Rotarians for being encouraging role models to our students!

“Make your anger so expensive that no one can afford it and make your happiness so cheap that people can almost get it for free,” Kushandwisdom. Teachers often worry about their students’ struggle with anger. To help teachers address the problem, our Child and Family Advocacy Department teamed up with Milwaukee School of Engineering Nursing students. The nursing students taught our children how to control their anger, have a positive outlook on negative situations, and build their self-esteem. They also guided an open discussion about the traumatic effects of bullying. Thanks, MSOE Nursing students for helping our kids take on the challenges of anger and helping them create healthy relationships throughout their lives.
