Our group was founded by "Dr." George Gaye, a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. Master Yogananda is a world-renowned teacher and author of the classic treatise on yoga and spirituality Autobiography of a Yogi.
Dr. George met Yogananda in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the early 1920's while Yogananda was giving a series of lectures in the city. George happened to be walking on the street near the hotel where Yogananda was giving his lectures when he noticed a man on the sidewalk wearing ochre robes and a turban. As the two men passed, Yogananda turned and said to George, "You be at the lecture tonight." George did as he was told and ss a result, George took yoga instructions from Yogananda, was initiated by him into Kriya yoga, and he became a life-long disciple.
In a letter Yogananda sent to George in 1938, Yogananda told George that he, George, had become a Master of Yoga and that he should be addressed appropriately with a title such as Master or Doctor. Thereafter people used the title "Dr." for George, in some respects because of the many healings he performed.
As the years progressed, guided by Yogananda, Dr. George established a church and meditation group in Milwaukee and was head of both the early Chicago and Milwaukee SRF (Self-Realization Fellowship) groups. Dr. George also founded an 80-acre retreat near Frienship, Wisconsin as his effort towards Yogananda’s World Brotherhood Communities. Master Yogananda told George that in this liftetime he was to remain unknown except for a small group of people. Today, although Dr. George passed away in 1978, his church still thrives in Milwaukee.
