A bill introduced in the Wisconsin state legislature provides that a county or municipal vehicle registration fee, commonly known as a wheel tax, may be imposed ONLY if approved by a majority of electors voting in a referendum at a regularly scheduled election.

Today, December 14, 2017 the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors approved the request to transfer the required funds to replace the two dilapidated bridges in Lyon's Park. Construction is scheduled to begin in August, 2018.
Today marks the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which led the United States to enter the Second World War. We honor and remember the more than 2,400 American sailors, soldiers, and civilians who died during the attack and the 1,000 who were wounded. Few of the veterans who experienced the attack are still alive today.
The Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The assault took American forces by surprise early in the morning.

Abele's TV ad makes no mention of his budget increasing the wheel tax to $60, increasing property taxes as much as the law will allow, raising every imaginable county fee for services and putting parking meters on Milwaukee's lakefront (and where ever else he can think of to put them).
I haven't seen the County Executive's budget proposal yet, but it's a safe bet that once again it contains zero effort to find efficiencies, or eliminate duplicative services or waste or fraud or outright cuts to the budget. I mean really....Milwaukee County pays the UW Extension over $1 million to teach people, among other things, how to plant flowers. Is that the priority of the taxpayers?
Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will propose $60 wheel tax and additional parking fees in 2018 budget.
Anyone who has registered a car this year or renewed license plates may have noticed the $30 per vehicle increase in cost in 2017 (which is slated for an even greater increase in 2018). Supervisor Alexander is proposing, and I am co-sponsoring a rule be put into county ordinances that would require that IF we are going to continue having this tax, elected officials must vote for it every year - not just once in 2016 and stick it to the residents indefinitely, year after year. If you feel strongly about the need for this "Sunset the Wheel Tax" rule, please know there is a public hearing scheduled for 10:30am THIS WEDNESDAY, Sept. 20th, at Room 203R of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. It is item #12 (or file# 17-591) on the agenda for the Finance & Audit Committee. They will be accepting public testimony. You can read more about the legislation here if interested:

Today, September 11th, is not only a day of remembrance for all those who have lost their lives on this infamous day. On this day 16 years ago, at the World Trade center, the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 ("Let's Roll" Stonycreek Township, PA) we lost a total of 2,978 innocent lives. We also honor and pray for the families left behind. We also give thanks to all those who risked their lives that day and all the days that followed to help those caught in the crossfire of this vicious attack.

Knowing that the construction of Confederate monuments peaked in the 1910s and 1920s, when states were enacting Jim Crow laws, and later in the 1950s and 1960s, amid the Civil Rights Movement, decades after the Civil War ended. I don't have a problem with the removal of statues of Civil War leaders who led an insurrection against the United States of America.
I DO however have a problem with any and all acts of violence masquerading as free speech. I don't care who you are.

I've said this before. Just because Sheriff Clarke doesn't follow Milwaukee County policy (which I voted against), doesn't mean the policy doesn't exist. A recently adopted Milwaukee County policy violates federal immigration law, not Sheriff Clarke's ignoring that policy. The "policy" exists whether it is implemented or not.
The U.S. Justice Department has confirmed that it will block Byrne Justice Assistance Grants. Milwaukee County will lose approximately $937,932.00 annually in federal aid for criminal justice.

On Thursday, a Wisconsin federal judge issued a preliminary injunction barring Milwaukee County from enforcing an ordinance that I voted against which was adopted in reaction to 2016's Pokemon Go phenomenon.
