Milwaukee County Transit System Revamps Amid Declining Ridership

Randal O’Toole, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, recently wrote that “there seems to be no positive future for public transit.”

Bus ridership across the country is on the decline, and Milwaukee has been hit especially hard. A complete redesign of the MCTS system hopes to help reverse the trend.

Milwaukee civil rights leader Vel Phillips passes away at 94

I was honored and blessed and a little bit starstruck to have met with a true Milwaukee Icon on a number of occasions. Her diminutive physical stature belied the impact of her presence in government and the community. I mourn, along with a grateful community, the passing of a legend.

MILWAUKEE -- The first woman and African American on Milwaukee's City Council has passed away. Vel Phillips was 94 years old. Throughout her life, Vel Phillips worked tirelessly for civil and human rights. Work recognized here in Milwaukee and across the state. Phillips was the first African America...

Wisconsin Legislature: AB361: Bill Text

A bill introduced in the Wisconsin state legislature provides that a county or municipal vehicle registration fee, commonly known as a wheel tax, may be imposed ONLY if approved by a majority of electors voting in a referendum at a regularly scheduled election.

Relating to: requiring a local referendum to impose a wheel tax.

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which led the United States to enter the Second World War. We honor and remember the more than 2,400 American sailors, soldiers, and civilians who died during the attack and the 1,000 who were wounded. Few of the veterans who experienced the attack are still alive today.

The Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The assault took American forces by surprise early in the morning.

The first wave of Japanese fighters fired on the island at 7:55 a.m. Hawaiian time and five additional attacks followed throughout the day, until 9 p.m.

Defenders of the military base were caught unprepared as they expected any attack, if one occurred, would come from the sea rather than the air.

It is my pleasure to co-sponsor a 3rd option for the Milwaukee County Budget, one that will achieve a balanced budget with minimized tax levy, minimized borrowing, and no increase to the wheel tax, while restoring funding that would have been cut to the Parks Department, restoring funding for bus routes, restoring funding for homeless shelters, restoring funding for child support, restoring funding for senior centers, and prioritizing public safety.

As the Milwaukee County Board has deliberated options for the 2018 Milwaukee County Budget, many have exclaimed that they wish there were more options. I am pleased to announce offering a 3rd option for the Milwaukee County Budget, one that will achieve a balanced budget with minimized tax levy, minimized borrowing, and no increase to the wheel tax, while restoring funding that would have been cut to the Parks Department, restoring funding for bus routes, restoring funding for homeless shelters, restoring funding for child support, restoring funding for senior centers, and prioritizing public safety. I am grateful to Supervisor Dan Sebring for co-sponsoring the amendment. Please click the link below to view a "Crosswalk Document" detailing the differences between the County Executive's proposed budget, Chairman Lipscomb's amendment, and the Alexander-Sebring amendment.

Chris Abele for Milwaukee County - Plan

Abele's TV ad makes no mention of his budget increasing the wheel tax to $60, increasing property taxes as much as the law will allow, raising every imaginable county fee for services and putting parking meters on Milwaukee's lakefront (and where ever else he can think of to put them).

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele's budget request will include $60 wheel tax and parking fees

I haven't seen the County Executive's budget proposal yet, but it's a safe bet that once again it contains zero effort to find efficiencies, or eliminate duplicative services or waste or fraud or outright cuts to the budget. I mean really....Milwaukee County pays the UW Extension over $1 million to teach people, among other things, how to plant flowers. Is that the priority of the taxpayers?

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will propose $60 wheel tax and additional parking fees in 2018 budget.

Milwaukee County - File #: 17-591

Anyone who has registered a car this year or renewed license plates may have noticed the $30 per vehicle increase in cost in 2017 (which is slated for an even greater increase in 2018). Supervisor Alexander is proposing, and I am co-sponsoring a rule be put into county ordinances that would require that IF we are going to continue having this tax, elected officials must vote for it every year - not just once in 2016 and stick it to the residents indefinitely, year after year. If you feel strongly about the need for this "Sunset the Wheel Tax" rule, please know there is a public hearing scheduled for 10:30am THIS WEDNESDAY, Sept. 20th, at Room 203R of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. It is item #12 (or file# 17-591) on the agenda for the Finance & Audit Committee. They will be accepting public testimony. You can read more about the legislation here if interested:

Title: A resolution/ordinance requiring the Vehicle Registration Fee Program be reauthorized each year for the subsequent year, and amending Chapter 66 of the Milwaukee County Code of General Ordinances to promulgate the reauthorization process.

Today, September 11th, is not only a day of remembrance for all those who have lost their lives on this infamous day. On this day 16 years ago, at the World Trade center, the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 ("Let's Roll" Stonycreek Township, PA) we lost a total of 2,978 innocent lives. We also honor and pray for the families left behind. We also give thanks to all those who risked their lives that day and all the days that followed to help those caught in the crossfire of this vicious attack.

Knowing that the construction of Confederate monuments peaked in the 1910s and 1920s, when states were enacting Jim Crow laws, and later in the 1950s and 1960s, amid the Civil Rights Movement, decades after the Civil War ended. I don't have a problem with the removal of statues of Civil War leaders who led an insurrection against the United States of America.

I DO however have a problem with any and all acts of violence masquerading as free speech. I don't care who you are.

That's all I have to say about that.

261 "Sanctuary Cities" to Lose Millions in Funding; Here's The List

I've said this before. Just because Sheriff Clarke doesn't follow Milwaukee County policy (which I voted against), doesn't mean the policy doesn't exist. A recently adopted Milwaukee County policy violates federal immigration law, not Sheriff Clarke's ignoring that policy. The "policy" exists whether it is implemented or not.

The U.S. Justice Department has confirmed that it will block Byrne Justice Assistance Grants. Milwaukee County will lose approximately $937,932.00 annually in federal aid for criminal justice.

Milwaukee aldermen attack dedicated bus rapid transit lanes - Milwaukee - Milwaukee Business Journal

MCTS says the proposed BRT will create jobs and grow the economy along it's proposed route.
Meanwhile in the real world, a Milwaukee County music publishing company says the proposed Rapid Transit Bus would trigger relocation outside Milwaukee County causing the loss of 150 jobs.

“We believe this proposed BRT program is going to be a disaster... If this plan goes through, it would make sense for us to move our company outside of Milwaukee County.”, Keith Mardak - CEO Hal Leonard Corp.

Milwaukee aldermen rallied against plans for dedicated driving lanes for the bus rapid transit line, saying Milwaukee County planners are mapping out a route the city will never allow.

Milwaukee County eviction proposal would let tenants reduce rent payments for defects

I opposed the Milwaukee County eviction proposal that would, among other things, allow residential tenants to "engineer" reductions in their rent and would encourage landlords to divest themselves of investment properties in Milwaukee County thereby creating a new kind of housing crisis. The proposal died in committee today.
