In challenging times, we at Epilepsy Families Southeast Wisconsin want you to still be able to strive to be the healthiest as possible and enjoy the outdoors, so we would like to provide scholarships for families with epilepsy to attend Blue Lotus Days, formerly Zip Days, an outdoor event for children with special needs and their families/caregivers that is held by the Blue Lotus Farm & Retreat Center. Blue Lotus Days offers a fun-filled day of activities such as fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, nature activities, yard games, and more. Since everyone’s health and safety is Blue Lotus’ top priority, there are some changes this year, including that each day only 5 families can attend, but Blue Lotus is increasing the number of days to attend.

Registration is now open. Once five families have registered for a specific date, registration will automatically close. There will be a waitlist for each date, so if registration is closed, please send an email to [email protected] to be added.

The dates are Tuesdays: July 7th & 21st; August 4th & 18th, and weekends: July 25th; August 2nd & 22nd; Sept. 12th. The cost is $5 per person.

The study is online, so individuals can stay safe during the pandemic. To be eligible to participate in the study, children need to be ages 4-8, monolingual English speakers, and diagnosed with a seizure disorder. The study includes an online communication assessment and 3 to 4, 35-minute sessions via zoom calls. A $50 Amazon gift card will be given after the assessment is completed. As you know, things have changed drastically, in other words, the world has been turned upside down. Unfortunately this years 20th annual Brainstorm Walk/Run has been Canceled for health and safety reasons. But....we have developed something else a bit different to supplement it this year.

This will be a month long Walk that you do on your own time to meet a mileage goal that YOU set. It will take place from September 1st until September 30th. You can walk alone, with your dog, your friends, your family and so on. Just get out of the house and stay healthy! The most important thing to us during this mess the world is in, is keeping our friends safe and healthy. We care about you.

Registration will begin soon and more details will follow. I can say we are asking you this year to get as many sponsors to donate as much as they can to raise money.

The Walk is called Called Step On Nineteen in 2020 for Epilepsy. There is a reason for that. The cost to register is $19 and we are donating 19% of all of the funds/donations we receive to Covid-19 related causes in SE Wisconsin/ Wisconsin. So we are hoping to have a very successful walk! There will be other elements involved, which will be released later about the event. Thanks for reading this and we will talk to you soon! Stay Healthy Everyone!

Creating a Special Needs Financial Plan

Hello Everyone,
This might be helpful, its not affiliated with us. But again, it could be of interest.. It is sponsored by Northwestern Mutual.

How are you and your family doing in self-isolation? This time is surreal. I have had a number of conversations with people of all ages, occupations, and incomes – people are scared and confused. Many are thinking about what happens to their loved ones if something happens to them, worrying about what they need to do or if they have done everything necessary to protect their families. If you have a loved one with disabilities, the planning is different both legally and financially.

We are offering a FREE online educational webinar about special needs planning. Topics covered include an overview of SSI & SSDI, Medicaid & Waivers, ABLE accounts, special needs trusts, and other important considerations to help family members better understand how to plan for a family member with special needs.

Click on the registration link below to sign up. A confirmation email will be sent with login information. Please share with others you know that may find this information relevant and valuable.

Join us, get your questions answered, and talk with a fellow parent in a non-threatening, non-pressure environment.

Speaker: Debbie Niemann's teenage daughter, Cecilia, has cerebral palsy and complex medical issues. As a parent to a child with special needs, she understands the mentality of living one day at a time, but this approach falls short when it comes to providing a financially secure future and desired quality of life. Debbie is a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual and has her Chartered Special Needs Consultant designation through the American College. She helps families with their special needs planning throughout the United States.

As fellow special needs parents, Debbie Niemann and Ivailo Grigorov are familiar with the common fears you may have about the topic of long-term planning for your child. Debbie's daughter, Cecilia, was born 3 months premature and is now 16 years old. Cecilia's had many "close calls" medically that h...

I’m wondering if anyone knows of any resources for getting rides to doctor appointments and such? I have 4 kids and my husband and I both work full time. I recently had a seizure and am therefore not able to drive for 3 months. Now my husband has to get up early to drive me to work, my parents are picking me up from work and we are paying someone to pick my 2 youngest up from their babysitter everyday to bring them home to me. It’s a lot of coordinating and is getting overwhelming. Now I have to figure out ways to get to doctor appointments and Uber is pretty expensive. Any ideas?
Does your child have seizures and speech deficits? Marquette University’s Communication, Movement and Learning Lab is recruiting research participants so we can learn more about this! Children will complete a thorough speech, language, cognitive, and motor assessment over the course of 3 sessions and you will receive a small compensation and report of your child’s performance. Speech treatment as part of our intervention study will be available for children who qualify. Please call us at 414-288-3891 or email us at [email protected] to learn more!

Just wanted to make sure you've heard of this great middle grade book! Meena Meets Her Match is a creative and positive story about the moment Meena is diagnosed with epilepsy, making it a fantastically important read for friends, classmates, or siblings of kiddos who experience seizures—or those kiddos themselves. The tale beautifully explores family relationships... celebrates free-spirited creativity and the power of friendship when life turns tough.
This is a great resource for children with Childhood Absence Epilepsy and families. It is educational and is perfect to read to a child's classmates to help them understand what their friend experiences:
