(1)

The class will develop vocal technique and style and explore a wide variety of repertoire including classical, popular, vocal jazz and Broadway. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings in the Chapel at Pius XI High School. APPRENTICE LEVEL (Grades 3-6) This class is for the student who exhibits a strong desire to sing. Each lesson combines the learning of musical skills, group singing, and builds music reading and vocal skills. This class is an excellent way for children to explore their interest in music and singing and prepare them for advanced study in the Young Artists program. Classes are held Monday afternoons in the Chapel at Pius XI High School.

Mission: The Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee is designed to be an enrichment opportunity for singers who perform in school and community groups, who study privately or who simply are looking for an outstanding musical outlet. Our goal is to create a restorative environment of joy, of excellence, and of encouragement that will revive the spirit through music.

PROGRAM
Vocal Arts Academy Young Artists

Gloria in Excelsis (from Gloria RV 589) - Antonio Vivaldi (1669?-1741)
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, nicknamed “il Prete Rosso” (the Red Priest) because of his red hair, was an Italian Baroque composer, Catholic priest and virtuoso violinist. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. This is the opening movement of his most popular vocal work.

Ave Verum Corpus - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Mozart composed this motet in 1791 while in the middle of writing his opera Die Zauberflöte. It is only forty-six bars long and contains minimal directions, with only a single “sotto voce” marking at the beginning.

Domine Deus (from Gloria RV 589) - Antonio Vivaldi (1669?-1741)
Molly Fritsch, soprano
Also from the Vivaldi Gloria, this movement for soprano soloist is in a lilting compound meter with text that translates: Lord God, Heavenly King, God the Father almighty.

Der Herr segne euch (May God Bless You) - J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
Ethan Shuler, tenor
Philip Shuler, baritone
Ellen Shuler, Piano
This movement is from Bach’s Cantata No. 196 “Der Herr denket an uns” (The Lord Is Mindful of Us). This particular work was written in 1707 or 1708 possibly in honor of a wedding in Bach’s family. The text translates: May God bless you now and forevermore, you and your children.

Laudate Pueri Dominum (Op. 39, No. 2) - Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
VOCAL ARTS WOMEN
Felix Mendelssohn occupies a crucial link between the classical era of Mozart and Beethoven and the romantic era of Brahms and Schumann. Known primarily for orchestral works like the Hebrides overture and the Midsummer Night's Dream music, this work is the first part of his Opus 39 for Women's Chorus. The text derives from Psalm 113 and it was part of the Vesper psalms. It translates: O praise the Lord, ye children, praise the name of the Lord.

The Oak and the Ash - Traditional English
arr. Philip Lawson
Anna, Olivia and Tess Weinkauf
This north country English folksong reflects a popular theme of 17th century England during the time of rapid industrialization. The maid has left her home in the north and traveled to London and thinks fondly of her home and “the oak and the ash and the bonny ivy tree.”

Hallelujah for the Day - Andrea Ramsey
VOCAL ARTS MEN
With words adapted from a traditional Ghanian fisherman's prayer, this text reflects the influence of symbolic Christian ideas and language. A native of Arkansas, Andrea Ramsey has 12 years of teaching experience and currently is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University.

Mama, Look Sharp (from 1776) - Sherman Edwards
VOCAL ARTS MEN
Story Sandy, tenor
From the musical 1776, this beautiful and emotional song, sung by a young soldier, highlights the reality that while men in wigs and frock coats were writing history in Philadelphia, battles were being fought by young patriots.

Tell My Father (from The Civil War) - Jack Murphy/Frank Wildhorn
arr. Andrea Ramsey
VOCAL ARTS MEN
Joe Thiel, baritone
Chris McAttee, violin
From the Broadway musical The Civil War by Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy, this dramatic song brings the reality of war into strikingly personal terms as a young soldier sings of his father and his own mortality.

Ose Shalom (The One Who Makes Peace) - John Leavitt
Chris McAttee, violin
Translating as: “The One who makes peace in the heavens, may He make peace for us and for all Israel and let us say Amen,” this simple prayer for peace is a fitting work for troubled times.

Sicut Locutus Est (from Magnificat, BWV 243) - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
This movement from Bach's Magnificat in D major is a fugue, which is a compositional technique in which one voice presents a melodic theme (the subject) which then is presented successively in each other voice until all voices have completed their statement of the subject. Bach was a master of the form, although it was used by Mozart, Beethoven up through composers of the 20th century. The text translates: As it was spoken to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendents for ages.

Sing Out Your Joy - Emily Crocker
Composed in 1989 for the Lake Highlands Junior High Chorale, this work is based on a text from Psalm 33. Opening with a bold angular theme: “Sing out your joy to the Lord! O ye just,” it moves through several contrasting sections before modulating and returning to the opening musical material and a jubilant closing.

Good advice for young artists!

My father was a businessman and, aside from being very supportive of my career, he was not involved in the music business at all.
