My passions include storytelling, food, dance and art. I am passionate in finding creative ways to use food, storytelling, and art to form community. My interests included dancing, creating art, reading and watching Disney movies.

Inspirational Quote:
Your ancestors did not survive
everything that nearly ended them
for you to shrink yourself
to make someone else
comfortable.

This sacrifice is your warcry,
be loud,
be everything
and make them proud.

Meet Teeb Lee (he/him), our new Program Associate through Public Allies Twin Cities!

Teeb is a young passionate, community organizer and movement builder. His self-awareness of how he shows up in the world, as a young Hmong man has been a building block which he comes from, to understand himself through the lens of education, race, gender, and culture.

Aside from working at CAAL, Teeb volunteers his time at the non-profit organization, Manforward, that works towards ending gender-based violence, building new practices of siblinghood, and bringing gender equity into the world. In ManForward, he co-facilitates workshops, photographs, and documents the spaces created in Manforward and the Manforward network for Southeast Asian masculine identifying folks.

Teeb saw that in his Hmong community, gender equity was not the norm. He believes in a world free from gender-based violence and the power of collaboration in social justice movements. Much of Teeb’s learning has been spent on developing a gender analysis lens, polishing his leadership skills in storytelling, facilitating workshops, creating healthy and intimate relationship building, and community organizing.

More words from the national office.

The Grand Jury verdict yesterday evening in the murder of Breonna Taylor—65 years to the day after Emmet Till’s murderers also went free—confirms what we’ve long known to be true: systems in this country were not designed to value Black lives and protect Black bodies. Wholly new systems and leaders are needed for justice to be within reach.

We must and will continue to #sayhername and fight each day to end the tide of racist violence and remake our systems grounded in the central belief that #BlackLivesMatter. We must all vote in November.

We're thrilled to welcome Sylvie Dosseh as our new Programs Associate through Public Allies. Hooray!! 🎉

____

Sylvie Dosseh is a Montessori educator and a mother of two beautiful children. She was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal of Togolese parents. As a teenager she moved to Togo and later immigrated to the US as a young adult.

Sylvie has worked as an educator since 2001 and is passionate about child and family advocacy, ensuring that children are always a priority. She joined AmeriCorps-Public Allies in 2019 and on this year’s journey with the Organization/Program, she has been placed at Green Card Voices.

Sylvie has always embraced cultural diversity and feels most fulfilled when surrounded by people of different cultural backgrounds. She still reminisces about her time at then-Winnetka Learning Center, working with families that came from all corners of the world and being enriched by their stories. So, she is thrilled to be the new Program Associate at Green Card Voices where she hopes not only to help the organization build capacity but also to gain new skills from the experience.

Sylvie believes that being placed at Green Card Voices is a true stroke of serendipity since writing is one of her hobbies. She hopes someday to be able to share her work with the world as an emerging writer.

Sylvie lives in Minneapolis and enjoys spending her free time with her family and going on walks.

The African American Leadership Forum welcomes Kitana Holland as our new Public Ally AmeriCorps service member!
Kitana is an upcoming entrepreneur, healer, activist, foodie, and teacher. Initially she wanted to work in college access programs to serve first-generation and low-income students, and realized through this work that youth need social and emotional education before thinking about their identity, passions, and future. It made her consider that we don’t give youth choices or opportunities to play with their interests as a form of entrepreneurship.

Kitana reclaimed her purpose and passion for mental health and wellness awareness through movement. Kitana has been teaching hip-hop and Afrobeat cardio classes for a year and it’s helped her channel her trauma and grief while being free with her body. Her community always shows out as the village that is mentoring, challenging, and embracing her. Kitana believes that movement is a form of radical self-care and activism and she hopes to continue this work spreading Black wellness with her platform. She is excited to take a step back in her professional career to get a clearer idea of where her gifts lay in the community and nonprofit world, and it’s great to get that exposure through Public Allies and AALF!

Happy Pride! Now more than ever, we find ourselves needing to stand for each other. In the midst of so much uncertainty, we must remember the spirit of #Pride and those who made history by fighting against injustice and hatred.

General information

Since 1992, through our partnership with AmeriCorps, Public Allies has developed and honed a learning process that is designed to use the platform of community work to facilitate the leaning of leadership skills. Public Allies Believe that leadership develops through hands-on experience with the support of training, community and reflection. Our learning process weaves together four key elements that constitute an experiential journey of self-discovery and professional development.
