Of 43 sudden, unexpected infant deaths reviewed since 2005, 41 have died as a result of unsafe sleeping practices. Only two have died of SIDS. Accidental suffocation is the rule, and SIDS is the exception. These deaths by suffocation are preventable.
A City of Milwaukee ad campaign made national headlines recently when it depicted infants lying in bed with dangerous objects, such as a butcher knife and meat cleaver. The message: Parents who co-sleep with their infant children run the risk of accidentally smothering them to death.
