MPS budget: Board approves raises, retirement at 55, new hires and controversial busing plan

A lot of uncertainty ahead. Moving chairs is good metaphor. But, I’m happy to see most highlights here and a little concerned with CTE cuts (and got a flashback visceral memory of painful deliberations...). To the current Board and admin: thanks for the serious considerations and decisions! Check the latest on MPS budget.

The MPS budget funds the restoration of two benefits eliminated after Act 10: a structured pay scale and retirement at 55.

Carol, do you know when next year's calendar is being discussed or finalized? Was it tonight? I need to plan my summer :-)
Good evening, I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering this, so I'm posting publicly. The calendar voting forms came home saying each parent/guardian gets one vote but only one form was sent home. Guidance on how to have each parent vote? Thank you.
MPS should have been closed today!!! Roads aren’t plowed and putting children in harms way. Give the teacher and children a break.
Rufus King parents received information today about a new mandate from central office. Guidance counselors will no longer be seeing students based on last name, it will now be by grade level. This means that there will be one guidance counselor for every 300 students. How can the board let this happen?? How is my son, a soon to be senior, supposed to get all the info about applying for colleges and scholarships? One guidance counselor does not have enough time for that. I thought MPS was all about college and career readiness?? I guess not. Really disappointed with everything about this. This is unacceptable!
Just wondering -- What is the long term plan for MPS to develop and operate a virtual public school? There are many parents who have chosen virtual school as a best fit for their child and would love to be a part of MPS, but have had to become part of a different school district since MPS does not offer this option.
My thoughts go out to the board as MPS faces a 38 million dollar budget deficit for next year. Might I suggest one place to cut would be to reverse the uniform policy. I recently toured a school where I did not see 1 child out of 900 wearing a uniform. (And this school has purchased uniforms). I have heard the the program potentially costs MPS millions. Can we partner with other social service agencies to provide "back-to-school" shopping days for families to obtain free or affordable clothing. Then...stop spending money on uniforms on the district level. Those schools that want uniforms can determine if they provide educational value in their own budgeting. In general, I favor more localized control of budgeting anyway. Centralization of certain positions does not seemed to have provided schools with the power of creativity to meet students needs in the best way possible. The current process of keeping the budget discussions under wraps for so long at the Administration level also does not allow for creative input from neighborhood educators and parents.
Please support MPS students in participating in exercising their first amendment rights to peacefully assemble and advocate for their safety and their lives. Even if those protests fall on a school day. Fostering meaningful civic engagement is an incredibly worthwhile educational opportunity!!
I am writing to express my support for our district allowing students to protest the gun violence that continues to get worse in our schools. I do not want any MPS kids punished for protesting. In fact, I think our district should lead the country in a unified stance in support of legislation to keep our students safe from mass shootings - a ban on large capacity magazines and assault rifles! I am willing to take a day off of work to enable students to walk out safely. Sincerely, Karen Bauer
Hi Director Voss...Can you help me understand why possible action on Child Savings Accounts is scheduled for Thursday's Board agenda. The DAC was asked to collect questions and feedback on this program. Yet we are not meeting to deliver that feedback until February 1. I have several questions about this program. And I have concern that could move us even further toward privatization and segregation of education funding. So...I'm concerned about action being taken ahead of community input.
