Ever wonder about the effects of plea bargaining? Vera Institute of Justice took a deep dive into the issue of plea bargaining and found that more than 90% of criminal cases that end in conviction are the result of plea bargaining - a low-visibility, off-the-record, and informal process that usually occurs far from open court.

It's been awhile since we've done a pretrial poll so let's dust off and try our hand at today's quiz!

True or False? Pretrial detention (jail before trial) increases a person's likelihood of pleading guilty by almost 50%.

Head to the comments to 'like' the correct answer (Facebook took away our polling option).

Juneteenth is one of the most important days in our country’s history. On June 19, 1865, a full two and a half years following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union soldiers arrived in Texas and announced that the enslaved people were now free.

Today, it is especially important for us to not only remember and honor those who fought then for their own civil rights, but to acknowledge the ongoing efforts now for the civil rights of black people.

Juneteenth Day has historically been a day of celebration. As we gather to celebrate the early freedoms won 155 years ago, we also recognize the unfortunate truth that so much work is still to be done to achieve a truly just, equitable, and fair America for Black Americans.

NAMI

In a time when our collective mental health needs are at their greatest, the work of NAMI is as important now as ever, if not more.

Annually, NAMI Greater Milwaukee hosts a walk to raise funds to support these services in our region. NAMIWalks Greater Milwaukee will still be holding their annual walk, only virtually. We will join thousands of virtual walkers in more than 37 other cities across the nation on Saturday, May 30, 2020 – a National Day of Hope and the capstone of Mental Health Awareness Month. NAMIWalks Your Way can be a 5K through your neighborhood, on your treadmill, or even something else meaningful and fun to celebrate. Take photos and videos and share your activity on a favorite social media with the link to your walk fundraising page and the hashtag #NotAlone and #MentalHealthForAll.

Let’s help NAMI Greater Milwaukee reach this year’s fundraising goal of $200,000. Visit The Difference Principle team page to register and help the cause. Our team is not exclusive to staff, so please feel free to invite others!

I'm supporting NAMIWalks Your Way Greater Milwaukee: A Virtual Event! Ask me how to get involved - We walk to bring awareness and reduce the stigma too often associated with mental health conditions. #MentalHealthForALL

SNEAK PEEK at Standard 2.8: We continue to support the use of empirical risk assessment tools as part of the bail decision. Our support for these instruments is further strengthened by the DECADES of research on risk at the pretrial stage and on the experiences of jurisdictions such as Washington, D.C., Kentucky, and New Jersey that have adopted risk tools in bail decision making.

Most importantly, we see risk assessments as CRITICAL in helping inform the conversation about the nature of bias in local bail decisions and the best strategies to address and eliminate unfair and unequal bail outcomes.

RISK ASSESSMENTS: There is a large body of scientific evidence demonstrating that objective, reliable, and valid risk assessment instruments are far more accurate in assessing risk than professional human judgments.

These statements align with the updated language in the NAPSA Standards on Pretrial Release 2020 (to be released later this year).

BREAKING FROM NAPSA: We support a ban on the use of money bail and we recommend and support the use of empirically developed pretrial risk assessments.

BREAKING: We are pleased to announce the upcoming release of our National Standards for Pretrial Release: Revised 2020. Perhaps the most striking addition to the 2020 Standards, and the most topical within the pretrial reform movement, is our recommendation that justice systems adopt empirically developed pretrial risk assessments.

Hi! I'd like to discover more about you. I'm thinking about applying for a job with you and I found you on Indeed. I have a background in criminology, paralegal and court system. I'm also in favor of restorative justice and using less of the prison system. We seriously need a wholistic approach when it comes to the administration of justice and public safety! ✌️
