Meet the next speaker for our April 4th conference, Deeatra Kajfosz!
Deeatra Kajfosz is an award-winning su***de awareness and prevention advocate, public speaker, and Founder of the LiFE OF HOPE organization, responsible for a comprehensive, peer- based approach to the prevention of su***de thought, action, and death. Her journey of hidden secrets, cycles of mental illness, and a near-fatal su***de attempt led to an unexpected series of events. Despite her own personal connections to the topic, she came to fully understand how
little she, herself, knew about the silent killer called su***de. Using her lived experience and extensive study into the complexities of su***de, Deeatra now dedicates her life to raising awareness, providing education, and supporting others at risk or affected by su***de ideation, attempt, and loss. It is through her own journey that her story connects with audiences to inspire mindful change. Hers is an extraordinary tribute to the gift of adversity, the power to rise above it, and the courage to share a life-saving message of community, connection, hope, and healing.
We hope you'll be able to join us on April 4th to hear Deeatra share her message, get your tickets now at http://www.tedxuwmilwaukee.com/
Our next speaker is Becky Curran Kekula, we're so excited for her to speak!
Becky Curran Kekula was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She received her B.S. in Marketing from Providence College, where she gained a passion for influencing change behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Upon graduation and after 100 job interviews in Los Angeles, California, Becky started working in the Entertainment Marketing department, followed by the Comedy Touring department, at CAA, the worldâs leading entertainment and sports agency. Five years later, she worked at CBS Television Studios, where she assisted with the casting of pilots and television series. During this transition, she also served as the Marketing Director and Co-Founding Board Member of the Catalina Film Festival. She also founded DisABILITY In Media, which focuses on positive disability inclusion storytelling through social media.
After her six and a half years of working in the entertainment industry, Becky launched a public speaking business. A prolific public speaker and advocate for disability inclusion on a global scale, she has spoken at over 150 venues, including schools, corporations, nonprofit organizations and government agencies, throughout the United States and Kenya. Sheâs really passionate about disability inclusion in schools, the workplace, and everywhere else.
More recently, she spent three and a half years working in the New York City office of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) & Diversity department at Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the worldâs largest entertainment union. At SAG-AFTRA, she supported the implementation of a national diversity plan of action to achieve accurate representation of those groups historically excluded from the entertainment and news media.
Becky resides with her husband Ryan in Milwaukee and also serves on the Board of Advisors for the National Center For Disability Journalism at Arizona State University.

Meet the next speaker for our April 4th conference, Anita Mogaka!
Born in Kenya and raised in Minnesota, Anita Mogaka moved to Milwaukee in 2013 to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance & Marketing with an International Business Certificate. She currently serves as the Marketing Communication Specialist at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Anitaâs work and engagement has all been driven by her keen interest in helping shape a positive narrative for the Milwaukee community. This interest led her to create The B.E.E. Narrative, a digital media platform that highlights Black Milwaukeeâs people, places, and experiences. The mission of The B.E.E. Narrative is to increase the visibility of positive narratives of individuals, businesses, and experiences of Milwaukeeâs African American community. To create shifts in mindsets that trigger a cascade of changes so profound that they test the limits of what seems possible in Milwaukee. The vision is to expose the hidden gems of the city and encourage people, specifically millennials, to live, work, and play in Milwaukee. As the Founder and Community Narrator of The B.E.E. Narrative, Anita knows that storytelling in the Black community is a form of preserving heritage and culture. Stories are shared to teach lessons, to unite/gather, and to encourage a sense of pride within communities.

Our second speaker for our "Our City. Our Story." Conference is August Ball! Buy your tickets at http://www.tedxuwmilwaukee.com/ to see her talk!
After nearly a decade working in the environmental sector, August M. Ball, a woman of color and citizen of the world, noticed a theme: Lack of representation of those directly and most likely to be affected by environmental degradation: People of color and low-income communities.
August founded Cream City Conservation in 2016 in response to the local disparity in hopes of empowering organizations to get out of their own way in addressing workforce equity and environmental justice.
Her two-prong social enterprise helps organizations attract diverse candidate pools and institute strategies that draw and retain top talent, making their workforce stronger and smarter and their programs more sustainable and relevant. Simultaneously, Cream City Conservation Corps cultivates the next generation of land stewards by introducing and training traditionally underrepresented teens and young adults in ecological careers.
With over 14 years of youth program management experience and 9 years of supporting local and national organizations, such as the Student Conservation Association, Urban Ecology Centers, US Forrest Service, Americorps and Milwaukee County Parks develop environmental programs that are culturally relevant and inclusive; August has connected thousands of youth and young adults to hands-on service to public lands, outdoor recreation and first time employment experiences.
August received her formal education from UW-Parkside and UW-Milwaukee, having studied Sociology, Community Education and Non-Profit Management. She has also continued her education informally via organizations such as Center for Diversity in the Environment, Paradigm and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
A native of Southeastern Wisconsin but citizen of the world (having lived in southeast Asia between the ages of 4-19), speaking three languages (Visayan, Tagalog and English) and currently learning Spanish, August enjoys traveling the globe, avoiding burdock and poison ivy while hiking with her rescue pit bull Marvin.
In this talk, August will highlight why people of color and low-income communities are disproportionately affected by environmental injustice and underrepresented in the environmental industry.
If you want to hear August speak, get your tickets now!

Aisha âEESHâ ValentĂn is a Milwaukee-based muralist, designer and fine artist whose creative roots stem from graffiti, hip hop culture and its outlining principles. Her colorful, narrative-driven work addresses themes of culture and community.
Under the mentorship of global street artist, Ras Terms, Aisha studied large-scale mural techniques â an experience that helped reinforce her love for public art and collaborating with communities. Their co-created murals are a vibrant, joyful celebration of hip hop and Afrofuturist styles, which has made their work especially sought-after for placemaking projects meant to embolden underserved neighborhoods in Milwaukee and beyond.
Aishaâs professional moniker, EESH WORKS, speaks to her multi-disciplinary talents and belief in the power of resourcefulness. Her creative process is deeply rooted in the hip hop principle of using whatâs available to beautify your reality, and to honor it as both a mechanism for survival and tool for expression outside of traditional approaches.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx, where x=independently organized event, in which smaller groups of people all over the country are granted license to curate, plan and hold a TED conference. In the Spring of 2014, a group of students from UW-Milwaukee found interest in this program and were granted a license to hold the first TED event in Milwaukee. TEDxUWMilwaukee is a completely student run organization, that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At our TEDx UWMilwaukee event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection between people. Since 2014, our organization has grown to partnering with dozens of local and national companies, and has brought in thousands of audience members who are interested in hearing about new ideas and starting new conversations. As far as the future sounds, TEDxUWMilwaukee hopes to go nowhere but up. The organization is a very dedicated job that we hope students interested in nonprofit finance, local business partnership and sponsorship, marketing, advertising and design, social media, stage design, video production, team building, speech curation and event production will find a place to build their skills and watch as a huge project they have dedicated so much work to will finally come to fruition.
Additionally, our main goal is for TED Talks to become a staple in the Milwaukee community. We want to create a space for people to open their mind to ideas that they have never thought of before and then start conversation within those spaces to improve the lives of those living in the city and outer lying areas.
