#TBT to the birth of an architect

In 1867, Frank Lincoln Wright (he changed his middle name after his parents divorced) was born in Richland Center, WI. The son of William Cary Wright, a lawyer and music teacher, and Anna Lloyd Jones, a school teacher, Frank Lloyd Wright's family moved to Madison in 1877 to be near Anna's family in Spring Green. Wright briefly studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, after which he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in architecture. Wright started his own firm in 1893 and between 1893 and 1901, 49 buildings designed by Wright were built. Some notable Frank Lloyd Wright structures in Wisconsin include S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. Administration Building in Racine, the A.D. German Warehouse in Richland Center, and Taliesin and Hillside in Spring Green. The Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison was also based on Wright's design. Frank Lloyd Wright died on April 9, 1959, in Phoenix, Arizona.

An architect, author, and social critic, Wright's artistic genius demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to create architectural space and vocabulary that drew inspiration from both nature and technology. #TBT to Earth Day founder born in Wisconsin

In 1916, Gaylord Nelson the founder of Earth Day was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Nelson was also a state and U.S. Senator and governor. He ran for the State Senate in 1948 and served ten years before being elected Governor in 1958. In 1962, Nelson was elected to the U.S. Senate. As a strong proponent of environmental protection Nelson proposed an environmental agenda for the 1970s in a speech given before the 91st Congress. The first Earth Day celebration was held April 22, 1970.

It’s no wonder Nelson was inspired to educate others on the importance of protecting the environment - Wisconsin is full of natural wonders and beauty for all to enjoy. KitchenTable Conversations has decided to take a break for the summer months as families and friends enjoy all that this season offers in our beautiful state. We want to thank each of you for being instrumental to our having eight months of constructive conversations around the issues dividing Wisconsin. Topics including:

+ Do poor people just want handouts?
+ Do rich people just want poor people trapped in poverty?
+ What is the cause of poverty?
+ Why do conservatives and liberals see the cause of poverty so differently?
+ Do people living in rural communities want the same things as people living in urban communities?
+ Do people living in rural and urban communities receive the same treatment?
+ Is city policing different than suburb policing?
+ Is racial profiling a crime or crime prevention?
+ What is the best way to prevent crime?
+ Are there alternatives to putting people convicted of nonviolent crimes behind bars?
+ Are criminals still criminals after they’ve served their time?
+ Should people with a criminal record be required to disclose this history to future employers?
+ Would you willingly send your child to a school that is failing in order to help that school improve?
+ Are public schools the best choice for learning?
+ Should public money be used to fund private schools?
+ What inequalities exist in your community and what do you wish you could do about them?
+ Which of your rights is the most important to you and why?
+ Is healthcare a right or a privilege?
+ Whose responsibility is it to ensure healthcare is available?

KitchenTable Conversations has grown from 8 brave people in Milwaukee to a community of Wisconsinites interested in listening to one another so they can find common ground around the issues dividing our state and move forward. KTC grew to people making eye contact and having constructive conversations in Janesville, La Crosse, + Milwaukee (3 locations), Green Bay and Wausau. And, thousands benefited from their experiences by watching and engaging on Facebook Live.
Please give some thought to the issues you’d like to discuss when we reconvene. And, have a wonderful summer in our great state of Wisconsin!

#TBT to the world’s largest six pack

In the late 1960s the G. Heileman Brewery built six large storage tanks at its plant in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The tanks were soon painted to resemble cans of Heileman's Old Style Lager beer, and proclaimed the "World's Largest Six Pack." Over the years the tanks have changed owners and paint, but now they stand proud with the label of La Crosse Lager for all to see. A helpful sign in front says that they would fill over 7 million twelve-ounce cans, which "would provide one person a six-pack a day for 3,351 years." Images of the sixer traveled the globe on postcards sold in the Heileman gift shop, which was part of the brewery tour. #tbt #lacrossewi
