It’s never too late to save our youth.
Yesterday was a very humbling experience and a true example of divine intervention for everyone involved. One of Chief W.J. McKenzie III’s dreams became a reality as the department transported 23 teenagers to the Belmont County Correctional Institution for a lecture and guided tour of the facility.
This was not a “Scared Straight” program, but rather an opportunity to remind our youth that every choice in life has consequences and to provide them with a real-life perspective on the importance of making good decisions. Teens from Mingo Junction, Steubenville, and throughout Jefferson County attended this impactful event.
This type of tour has not taken place at Belmont County in many years, but God made it possible. Warden Shelbie Smith welcomed our group with open arms and spoke to the youth as if they were her own children. Correction Warden Assistant II Evelyn Robertson was incredible throughout the entire process and worked tirelessly to help make this opportunity possible.
The major, sergeants, correctional officers, and all staff involved were outstanding. The youth had the opportunity to hear from three inmates currently serving life sentences. One inmate has served 30 years, another 17 years, and the third 9 years. They shared their personal stories, the poor decisions they made, and the life choices that ultimately led them to prison. Their testimonies were heartfelt, emotional, and powerful. Many of the teens were visibly moved and holding back tears as they listened.
The group toured several areas of the institution, including living spaces, cell blocks, intake and processing areas, recreation yards, control rooms, and common areas where daily life is carried out inside the facility. The youth also learned what day-to-day life looks like behind the walls and the reality of incarceration. They even had the opportunity to experience a prison lunch.
Our hope is that this experience serves as a reminder that every decision matters. It’s never too late to change direction, make better choices, and build a brighter future. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible and invested their time into the lives of our youth. Do not be a follower. Stand out. Be proud of who you are and do what is right.
