ArtWorks member Andrew Braunberger currently has an exhibition at Franklin Library through til early April. It must be seen! His description reads: “Art, Technology, and the Shadow.
By Andrew Braunberger
In my artistic practice, the digital world serves as both a boundless source of inspiration and a distinct realm to be reconciled with the tactile reality of my paintings and collages. This relationship often positions the digital space as a kind of ‘shadow’—a potent, intangible force that underlies the visible world. The vast, reproducible nature of digital imagery stands in stark contrast to the singular, built-up physicality of my works. My collages, in particular, may act as a physical manifestation of digital layering, where disparate elements are cut, pasted, and recontextualized with the friction and texture that screen-based media often smooths away.
My paintings and collages, therefore, become sites of resistance and synthesis, bringing the fleeting, luminous content of my digital life into grounded, material form. By using traditional media, I anchor the contemporary experience of the digital ‘shadow’ in the enduring language of physical art. This process allows for a deeper exploration of themes—like identity, memory, and authenticity—that are constantly being reshaped in the digital age. The final work is not merely a depiction of the digital world, but a record of the translation itself: a crafted artifact born from the interplay between the virtual and the deeply personal.”
