Happy Pride, Minneapolis! 🏳️‍🌈

This month and every month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, honor those who fought for progress, and keep building a city where everyone is free to love who they love and be exactly who they are.

Paris has the Eiffel Tower and Cairo has the pyramids of Giza—but Minneapolis has something just as powerful: a community that comes together through challenge and change.

Saype, an internationally acclaimed artist from France, recognized that and chose Boom Island Park in Minneapolis as the 22nd host and first city in the United States for his installment of “Beyond Walls.”

Get out there this Friday and Saturday from 3-5pm to see it yourselves!

The City of Lakes is now rightfully known worldwide as a city of heroes — a place where we look out for one another and recognize that our differences are our superpower. We may not be the biggest or richest city in the world, but the compassion our neighbors have shown each other makes us the greatest.

Proud to see our neighbors honored with the JFK Profile in Courage Award.

10 years ago, I purchased the piece on the left from Jayden Goldsboro - an aspiring 10-year-old artist committed to ending gun violence, and declaring “Art is My Weapon.”

Now 20 years old, Jayden is featured in an exhibit, attending school at MCAD, and making a career as an artist while pushing the same message. Watching people like Jayden succeed is one of the many reasons I love my job.

Today, we proudly unveiled Officer Jamal Mitchell Way.

Officer Mitchell was a hero, and two years ago, he gave his life to protect others. This street dedication stands as a powerful tribute to his legacy and a commitment to honoring his mission of service with the MPD and the very best of this department.

Our city was invaded and people were shot. Now it must be clear - nobody is above the law, including ICE.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent accused of shooting a man in the leg in north Minneapolis and then lying about the attack was arrested in Texas Friday morning, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

Christian Castro, 52, was charged on May 18 with four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime.

On Jan. 14, amid Operation Metro Surge, Castro shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg, the criminal complaint says. Charges say that he shot Sosa-Celis, who is a Venezuelan national, through a door of a home while knowing that there were people inside.

Proud to see the people of the Twin Cities recognized this weekend with the JFK Library Foundation’s “Profile in Courage” Award.

During Operation Metro Surge, neighbors showed up for neighbors — faith leaders, small businesses, educators, organizers, and everyday residents all stepping up to support immigrant communities and stand together.

That’s who we are in Minneapolis.

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation chose the people of the Twin Cities for a “Profile in Courage” award “for risking their lives to protect their neighbors and immigrant communities” during “Operation Metro Surge.”

Memorial Day is a time to remember the brave service members who gave their lives for our country and the freedoms we enjoy today.

We owe them — and the families who carry their memory forward — our deepest gratitude.

Today, we remember George Floyd, who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago.

That moment changed our city forever.

It forced Minneapolis to confront painful truths about race, policing, inequity, and trust — and demanded hard conversations and accountability.

Since Floyd’s murder, our city has been challenged not just to say we’ve changed, but to prove it. We’ve worked hard to reform policing, strengthen our department, and rebuild trust with neighbors – while knowing there is still more work ahead.

This anniversary also comes as reconstruction begins at George Floyd Square and work continues on the People’s Way. We are committed to honoring this place both as a memorial with global significance and as a neighborhood where people live, work, gather, and heal.

The work ahead is bigger than any one moment or administration. The weight of what happened is still with our city six years later – and the responsibility to keep moving forward together is too.

I know we can keep building a Minneapolis that is safer, more accountable, and more worthy of the people who call it home.
