🎤 Conference Speaker Spotlight

We’re excited to welcome Sean Lewin as one of the featured speakers at the 2026 Minnesota Association of Black Social Workers Annual Conference!

About Sean:
Sean Lewin was born in upstate NY, but raised in Bloomington, MN. He attended Hamline University where he majored in Psychology and Sociology. He first began working at the Salvation Armoy Booth Brown House in St. Paul in their Juvenile Treatment Unit, before moving up to the Boys Shelter Unit. He then moved on to work at the Isanti Boys Ranch, before taking his skills to Hennepin County as a juvenile STS Crew Leader. He then lateraled into a position in Juvenile Probation where he advanced and became a Probation Officer. He then shifted his career and worked at African American Family Services (AAFS), where he held positions of Truancy Specialist, Family Assessment Case Worker and ultimately Supervisor of the Family Services Unit. After AAFS dissolved, he moved onto Project for Pride and Living (PPL) as an Adult Case Manager before moving onto Ramsey County where he's been a Supervisor in the Juvenile Detention Center since 2014.

Why the Primary Election Matters

As social workers, advocates, and community leaders, we see firsthand how policy directly impacts the health, safety, and well-being of Black families and communities across Minnesota.

While many focus on the General Election, the Primary Election determines WHO makes it to the final ballot. Voting in the primary gives us the power to shape leadership from the ground up, including local judges, school boards, and state legislators.

Here is why showing up matters:

Representation: Ensure leaders reflect our values, equity goals, and lived experiences.

Systemic Change: Decisions around mental health funding, social services, criminal justice reform, and housing begin with who we nominate.

Community Health: Polling places and local outcomes shape the social determinants of health in our neighborhoods.

TODAY IS Primary Election Day: Tuesday, August 11

Before You Go: Check your voter registration, find your polling place, or cast an absentee ballot via the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

Rest is part of the work. 💙🌿

As social work professionals, we spend so much of our time caring for others—advocating, supporting, organizing, problem-solving, and showing up for our communities. But sustaining this work requires us to make space to care for ourselves and one another, too.

MNABSW’s Summer Retreat was an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, laugh, breathe, and simply be in community. Rest is not separate from our commitment to service. It helps us return to the work restored, connected, and ready to continue making an impact.

And we don’t have to do this work alone.

Today we are honored to spotlight Deseria Galloway, a dedicated leader and longtime member of the Minnesota Association of Black Social Workers (MNABSW)! ❤️🖤💚

Deseria has been a member of MNABSW since 1982, demonstrating more than four decades of unwavering commitment to our mission and the profession of social work. Throughout her years of service, she has held numerous leadership roles, including President, Secretary, and Conference Chair. Today, she continues to make an impact as Program Committee Chair, helping to create meaningful opportunities for learning, networking, and community engagement.

Deseria is deeply committed to the well-being of our communities and believes that our goal should not simply be to survive—but to thrive. Her leadership, wisdom, and steadfast dedication have helped shape MNABSW into the organization it is today.

Please join us in celebrating Deseria and thanking her for her decades of service, leadership, and commitment to uplifting Black social workers and the communities we serve. ✨
