A few of our firefighters participated in a one-day educational trip to Washington, D.C. hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council.

They were able to take a tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum with tour guide Eli Rosenbaum, the former Director of the US Department of Justice, Office of Special Investigations.

The experience was memorable and impactful for our crew as they learned more about the Holocaust and the importance of combating antisemitism. We’re grateful for opportunities like these that promote education, understanding, and community connection.

Fire Stations 2 and 3 – the city’s two oldest stations – are facing challenges tied to age, layout and modern safety standards. In order to continue supporting public safety and efficient emergency response, the city plans to rebuild these two stations to meet modern day standards.

The current stations were built decades ago and reflect an earlier era of fire service operations:

• The building layout was not designed for today’s 24-hour staffing model and best practices for firefighter recovery.
• Limited space makes it a challenge to clean, store, decontaminate and care for modern equipment and gear.
• Insufficient air quality systems do not meet today’s standards for protecting firefighter health and safety.

If approved by the Minnesota Legislature and by voters in November, the investments in the Minnetonka Together plan would address these challenges and more. Explore all projects included in the proposed plan at MinnetonkaTogether.com.

Today Deputy Fire Chief Derek Metzger attended Fire Service Day at the Capitol, a time where we get to meet legislators and work together to keep our communities safe.

Derek had the opportunity to meet with Representative Patty Acomb and Senator Ann Johnson Stewart. We thank them both for their time today.

Did you know today's fires move so fast you really only have 2-3 minutes to get out?

To put into perspective, it takes the same amount of time to:
- Brush your teeth fully
- Pack your kid's lunch for the day
- Wait for your coffee to brew

Modern homes have more flammable construction materials and home furnishing than older ones. This means fires grow rapidly and produce more heat and smoke, making a house fire dangerous faster.

So what can you do? One easy idea is to make an escape plan and practice monthly. For other tips, head to our website to find resources to keep your family safe.

Today for Severe Weather Awareness Week, we're focusing on all things tornadoes.

Did you know:
🌪️ Tornadoes can reach wind speeds over 300 mph
⏱️ Most tornadoes only last a few minutes
🏡 Even weak tornadoes can still cause serious damage. There are no "safe" tornadoes.

Day or night, tornadoes can wreak havoc. Be ready for watches, warnings or emergencies.

Reminder: Two tornado drills will sound statewide
- 1:45 p.m. Intended for schools and businesses
- 6:45 p.m. Intended for individuals

Outdoor sirens and weather radios will simulate a tornado warning.
