Housing is the beginning; stability is the goal.
So what happens in between?
Often, our opportunity to help a veteran begins because of a conversation around housing instability and homelessness. We've heard so many stories, stories that would break anyone's heart. Men and women who risked their lives and left their families for years to serve and protect our country, and who came back different. They tried to adjust, but they were looking at the world around them with different eyes. Nothing felt safe anymore; they were always on edge. The smallest detail or even a loud sound could bring up a memory they can't even begin to speak about. Before long, the responsibilities of civilian life become difficult to maintain while they fight an unseen war inside.
Often, by the time they find us, they have been living on the streets, in their vehicles, or couch surfing with friends and family, never knowing where they will stay next.
Nothing--and I mean absolutely nothing--surprises us. Because their story could have been my story. Or yours.
If you've lived with PTSD, you know at least a piece of what I'm talking about.
But the housing instability was never the root problem. It's a symptom. It's a crack in their otherwise strong persona. It's a sign that they could use care and support to find their way back to themselves again.
So, we start there. Because homelessness doesn't need to be an exacerbating factor. And here's the difference the transitional housing makes: it gives them a place to call their home. A place where they can feel safe. A place where they are among fellow veterans who understand what they're going through. And most of all, a place where they can breathe, heal, and rebuild.
If you've thought we're a transitional housing program for veterans, that's a good start. But that's only the beginning. There is so much more to our program than simply housing veterans in need. We aim to help them truly heal and rebuild their lives.
After all they have sacrificed, they deserve that and so much more.
We are here to help them achieve the life they truly deserve.
