SAL Family and Community Services

SAL Family and Community Services Our Mission: SAL Family and Community Services strengthens children, families, and individuals to build and enhance thriving communities.

In 1970, Skip-a-Long Child Development Services was founded as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality child care services to ALL children, regardless of financial means. At present there are three Skip-a-Long child care centers serving children in both Iowa and Illinois. In 1996, the Home Child Care Network was formed to assist parents in finding off-hours child care, and to

provide free services to home day care providers to improve quality, provide supplies and curriculum, and assist in state licensing procedures. The Home Child Care Network now operates their program in the Quad Cities and in the Peoria, IL area. In 2009, the state of Illinois asked Skip-a-Long to manage a pilot program which they expanded to the Rock Island, IL area called Open Door, which provides immediate financial, food, clothing, and referral assistance to those in crisis situations. Early in 2011, Skip-a-Long was asked to take on management of Child Care Connection, a child care resource and referral program funded by the state of Illinois. Later in the same year Skip-a-Long and its Board of Directors formed an "umbrella" entity to better encompass all the community services the organization had undertaken, since the agency was involved with more than just child care. Skip-a-Long Family and Community Services was founded, and Skip-a-Long, The Home Child Care Network, Open Door, and SAL Child Care Connection are now all programs under the "umbrella." SAL Family and Community Services believes our community thrives when children have high quality early care and education, when parents can work and go to school, when individuals get support they need to build self-reliance. That's why our agency offers child care resources for providers and referrals for parents SAL Child Care Connection in Peoria, IL and through the Midwest Child Care Resource and Referral in Moline, IL. We offer crisis assistance for families and individuals through our Illinois DHS program, Open Door. We offer a network of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift licensed home child care providers and personally work with providers to help them offer the best care possible through The Home Child Care Network in the Quad Cities and Peoria. We offer seven quality-rated, nationally accredited early care and education centers that serve children in Illinois and Iowa through Skip-a-Long Child Development Services.
