NJ Laborers PAC

NJ Laborers PAC Through the NJ Laborers Political Action Committee, union laborers have a strong political voice in Washington DC, Trenton and local communities in NJ.
(7)

The New Jersey Laborers' Political Action Committee (the 'Organization') was established April 23rd, 1987 to promote the election of responsible, qualified candidates to public office regardless of party affiliation, and to support candidates for public office who understand and appreciate the goals and objectives of the Eastern Region District Councils and local unions of the Laborers' International Union of North America relative to the labor movement.

Mission: Everyday people depend on the work of the New Jersey Laborers Union. Whether it's repairing the roads we drive on, building the schools where children learn, or any one of the thousands of other projects we work on—our men and women are not only proud to build, but to build a better New Jersey.

LIUNA General President Terry O'Sullivan on #MemorialDay:

"For many of us this Memorial Day weekend will be unlike any other in our lifetime, as our nation struggles with the health, economic, and social impacts of COVID-19. This weekend, many of us will spend time with family and enjoy a day off that marks the transition to summer. But while we have a holiday, tens of thousands of brave men and women in the Armed Services – including many #LIUNA members – will have no respite. They and their families accept daily hardships and dangers in order to protect our democracy and freedom.

"We owe these patriotic men and women, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in defense of our nation, a debt of gratitude. This weekend, take a moment to reflect and honor all those who have served. As we do so, let us also continue to build a stronger LIUNA and country, so that returning veterans have opportunities to prosper when their service has ended.

"On behalf of myself, LIUNA General Secretary-Treasurer Armand E. Sabitoni, and the entire General Executive Board, I wish each and every one of you an enjoyable and meaningful Memorial Day."

House Democrats pass $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill despite Trump’s veto threat

#ICYMI: The #HouseOfRepresentatives passed the #HeroesAct with all key provisions, including the #GROWAct, included.

From the Washington Post story:

"House Democrats on Friday passed a $3 trillion tax cut and spending bill aimed at addressing the devastating economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak by directing huge sums of money into all corners of the economy.

"But the White House and Senate Republicans have decried the measure’s design and said they will cast it aside, leaving uncertain what steps policymakers might take as the economy continues to face severe strains.

"The sweeping legislation, dubbed the “Heroes Act, passed 208-199. Fourteen Democrats defected and opposed the bill, reflecting concerns voiced both by moderates and liberals in the House Democratic caucus about the bill’s content and the leadership-driven process that brought it to the floor. The bill won support from just one Republican: Rep. Peter T. King of New York.

"Americans 'are suffering so much, in so many ways. We want to lessen their pain,' Pelosi said during House floor debate Friday. 'Not to act now is not only irresponsible in a humanitarian way, it is irresponsible because it’s only going to cost more, more in terms of lives, livelihood, cost to the budget, cost to our democracy.'

"The 1,800-page legislation contains a large number of provisions: nearly $1 trillion for state, local and tribal governments; another round of direct payments to individuals, up to $6,000 per family, including to unauthorized immigrants; $200 billion for hazard pay for essential workers; $75 billion for coronavirus testing and tracing; increased spending on food stamps; $175 billion in housing support; student loan forgiveness; and a new employee retention tax credit and extension of unemployment benefits."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi brings the bill to a vote amid divisions in her own caucus and no sign of bipartisan negotiations.

The new normal: 8 ways the coronavirus crisis is changing construction

Construction Dive on 8 ways #COVID19 is changing #Construction. No. 5—#union power. From the article:

“Since World War II, the percentage of the U.S. construction industry involved in union memberships has steadily declined, from about 87% of the workforce in 1947 to 12.8% in 2018. Nevertheless, since the pandemic began, trade unions have taken on renewed influence in many areas of the country by advocating for members’ best interests in keeping sites operational and safe.

"Trade unions in New York state were instrumental last month in persuading government officials to shut down projects that were previously allowed to continue, and in Massachusetts, two unions staged walkouts earlier this month in protest of what they deemed to be unsanitary working conditions.

"Other unions have wielded their influence to keep members on the job. Last month, North America's Building Trade Unions teamed up with the Associated General Contractors of America to ask government officials at all levels to make construction an essential service and exempt it from regional, state and local shutdowns.

"During the crisis, unions have provided a voice for workers who are struggling to decide whether they should stay home or go to work, said Mark Erlich, a fellow at Harvard University’s Labor and Worklife Program. Unions also help laborers find new work after a layoff.“'Clearly, being a union member has been enormously beneficial in the past few weeks,' he said.

"The appeal of unions will be stronger than ever going forward, Erlich said, a trend that 'will likely come into conflict with cost-cutting measures that construction employers will inevitably be considering once they reckon with the financial losses from the crisis.'

"To get ready for this trend, general contractors should be prepared to collaborate with unions and ensure they create work environments that meet their high standards for jobsite health and safety, even if they operate in traditionally open shop states.

“'It’s going to cost more money and not going to be as efficient as in the past, but the market is going to force those types of changes,' Natarelli said."

LIUNA Vice President and LiUNA Eastern Region Manager Raymond M. Pocino on #WorkersMemorialDay:

"Each year in America, thousands of workers die and millions more are injured or take ill because of their work. We should never accept even one injury or illness on the job and must always strive to make our workplaces even safer for everyone.

"As we all know, workplace deaths are largely preventable with proper #planning, #training, and #PPE. Safe jobs really do save lives and never was that as important as it is today."

A message from LIUNA General President Terry O'Sullivan in advance of #WorkersMemorialDay—Safe Jobs Save Lives:

"While we grieve for those lost, injured or sickened, uncertain of the extent of the work-related toll of the #coronavirus or its disastrous economic impact on working men and women, we must also act.

"We must enforce the fundamental right to protect ourselves on every jobsite and in every workplace. We must fight to ensure that our nations fulfill the moral obligation we have to care for each other so no one must risk their lives, their families' lives, or the lives of those in our communities in order to put food on the table. ... The price of going to work must never be death, injury or critical illness."

04/23/2020

#ICYMI: LIUNA General President Terry O'Sullivan on #COVID19:

"Brothers and Sisters, over the past few months, our lives have changed dramatically. Tens of thousands of our fellow Americans and Canadians—loved ones, friends, and coworkers—have lost their lives to COVID-19, and many more have fallen ill. If you have lost someone, you have our deepest condolences and sympathy. If you are sick, we wish you a speedy and full recovery.

"If you are still working, you have our eternal gratitude; your sacrifice and courage have not gone unnoticed. The work you do is critical to protecting our communities, our countries, and our way of life. You are facing unique and unprecedented risks, and you are putting the needs of others before your own. On behalf of myself, General Secretary-Treasurer Armand E. Sabitoni, and the entire #LIUNA General Executive Board, I thank you for your selfless effort, determination, and bravery.

"At every level of our great International Union, we are doing what Laborers always do; we carry on through adversity and crisis. The foundation built by our predecessors and each and every one of you provides us with the tools and resources to respond quickly, strategically, and effectively to this unparalleled public health emergency. As always, we continue to conduct the business of our union; we are developing work site safety protocols to protect the most valuable asset of our union, our members; we are making sure our voices and our views continue to be heard by elected officials; and we are fighting for relief and stimulus packages that put our members and their families first.

"I want to recognize the incredible job that our District Councils, Local Unions, and affiliated funds are doing to respond to this unprecedented crisis. I am awed and inspired by your dedication and commitment to our members, to our union, and to our two great countries. True leaders are defined not by how they perform in the best of times, but rather by how they lead, respond, and react in the most trying and turbulent times. Each and every one of you is a working-class warrior who makes us all proud.

"I also want to thank all of our dedicated members who are following the guidance of public health officials, taking care of themselves and their families, checking in on neighbors, and doing their part to keep us all healthy and safe. Never before in my life have I seen such a clear demonstration of the goodness and greatness of all our members than I have witnessed over the past few months. I have never felt more honored and humbled to be your General President than I do right now.

"In the 117 years since a small group of hod carriers and building laborers came together to organize our union, we have been through war and peace, boom and bust, good times and bad. We have survived the Great Depression, two World Wars, and many economic downturns. Through it all, we have persevered because of our solidarity, our unity, and our strength. No one member of LIUNA ever stands alone; each and every one of us has an army of 500,000 strong, proud, and united LIUNA brothers and sisters standing by our side.

"Despite the challenges and hardships we are facing, I am convinced that LIUNA will emerge from this with a renewed and uncompromising commitment to fight for justice, honor, and strength for all workers.

"I thank you and your families for your continued faith in, and loyalty to, our great International Union. May you continue to always Feel the Power, Use the Power, and Be the Power."
