THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE BADGE

Behind every investigation is a team working to uncover the facts.

At the Union County Sheriff’s Office, our Crime Lab uses science, technology, and specialized analysis to help detectives and deputies connect evidence to cases and provide answers for victims and their families.

Our Crime Lab is accredited in four key areas. Here’s a look at the work completed so far this year:

• Blood Alcohol Analysis: 161 cases
• Blood Drug Analysis: 81 cases
• Seized Drug Analysis: 275 cases, with 474 drug items tested
• Friction Ridge Analysis: 107 cases, including 1,560 latent lifts reviewed

Our Crime Lab also plays an important role in processing digital evidence, with 204 digital cases handled so far this year, including:
• 283 cellphones
• 57 media devices
• 53 computers

From a fingerprint left behind at a crime scene to evidence recovered during an investigation, the science behind the badge plays a critical role in uncovering the truth.

We appreciate the hard work, expertise, and dedication of our Crime Lab team and the important role they play in keeping Union County safe.

Late-Night Wesley Chapel Assault Leads to Felony Arrest

Deputies responded to the 6100 block of Pumpernickel Lane in Wesley Chapel earlier this week in reference to a disturbance. While deputies were on their way, they were notified that a knife was involved and that multiple people had been cut and were bleeding.

Deputies arrived shortly after and secured the scene. A male victim sustained a laceration to his face, while a female on scene sustained a laceration to her hand.
The offender, Chantrell Ross, had left the area prior to deputies’ arrival. While searching for Ross, deputies located him walking back toward the residence covered in blood. He was taken into custody without incident.

Following the investigation, Ross was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He remains housed at the Union County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

Both victims were treated for their injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

UCSO Celebrates Union County Senior Citizens

Earlier this week, Sheriff Eddie Cathey welcomed nearly 600 attendees from across Union County to our 29th Annual Senior Fraud Luncheon.

Guests had the opportunity to learn helpful tips and emerging trends from our Criminal Investigations Bureau to help them recognize scams, protect their personal information, and avoid becoming victims of fraud.

Congressman Mark Harris joined us as the keynote speaker, offering encouraging words to our seniors and sharing updates from Washington. We appreciate him taking the time to be part of this special event and connecting with members of our community.

A special thank you goes to the Union County Sheriff’s Office Foundation for their generous financial contributions and continued support. So many of our events would not be possible without their commitment to our community.

Thank you to all our volunteers, vendors, and participants who helped make this event such a success!

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested After Multi-Agency Investigation

Union County Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested a Monroe man connected to multiple armed robberies in Union County and Rockingham.

Detectives began investigating a gray Toyota Camry believed to have been used in multiple robberies. Surveillance footage from a Rockingham robbery allowed the Rockingham Police Department to identify the vehicle’s tag, providing detectives with a key lead in the investigation.

Through surveillance footage and other evidence, detectives linked Scottavais Hailey to the armed robberies at Wingstop and Indian Trail To***co and V**e, as well as a robbery in Rockingham.

On September 22, detectives with the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe Police Department, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant at Hailey’s Monroe residence. Additional evidence was seized further linking Hailey to the robberies.

Hailey was arrested and transported to the Union County Detention Center.
He has been charged with four counts of Armed Robbery, Second-Degree Kidnapping, 2 counts of Possession of a Fi***rm by a Felon, Larceny of a Fi***rm, Assault on a Female, RDO and Discharge of a Fi***rm into an Occupied Dwelling.

He is being held on a No Bond Currently.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office thanks the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Monroe Police Department, and Rockingham Police Department for their assistance in this investigation and successful arrest of Scottavais Hailey.
