The Reserve Forces Detail is the administrative headquarters for the LASD's Reserve Program, Explorer Program, Mounted Programs, and Sheriff's Chaplain Program. The Reserve Forces Bureau is the administrative headquarters for the Department's Reserve Program, Explorer Program, Mounted Programs, and Sheriff's Advisory Councils. With over 800 Reserves and 600 Explorers, the Sheriff's Department has

a wealth of resources that augment the various units on a daily basis. Upon successful completion, the applicant will attend a Reserve Academy, and when graduated, the Reserve will work at an assignment of their choice, suitable to their skill level. The Reserve Program is also responsible for overseeing and maintaining training, conducting annual unit inspections, and the coordination of personnel at various events. Explorer recruits also attend an academy like the Reserves, and are eligible to work a myriad of assignments offered. Both the Reserve and Explorer Academies have an agreement with various participating agencies who use the Department's resources and expertise to train their personnel as well.

Born out of necessity, our Reserve Deputy Program is one of the largest in the country. Our Reserves serve in assignments ranging from patrol, search & rescue, doctors on our air rescue helicopters, to the Crime Lab. In 2025 they worked 150,000 hours. Truly a tradition of service!

On Thursday, March 19th, we had a Reserve Recognition Dinner where we honored our over-400 Reserve Deputy Sheriffs who volunteered 150,000 hours last year, saving LA County $6,611,171.00 !!! Leo Stallworth was our Master of Ceremonies as Sheriff Luna handed out awards.

Most citizens wouldn’t go down that dark alley, or rappel down that cliff for a million dollars. Reserves do it for free.

LEGEND. After 43 years of selfless dedicated service, John Camphouse with LASD - Montrose Search and Rescue Team has hung up his harness for the last time. Responding to over 2,000 missions during his career, he leaves as one of the most active Search & Rescue operators in the country. Ever. He held all levels of leadership during his tenure, and was the co-founder of our Department’s Underground Mine Rescue Team. He will continue his work as an instructor for CMC Rescue, sharing his skills with rescue teams and private companies across the country. In his response area, there are few patches of dirt where he didn’t leave a footprint. Now those (figuratively) size 18 boots will be impossible to fill. John is a pillar that our program was built on and we will continue his vision and his continual drive towards excellence. Thank you for your service John and best of luck in your next chapter!!
