Dave Roper for Judge

Dave Roper for Judge Vote Dave Roper - A New Voice for Shelby County!

I am running for district judge to do my part to ensure the safety and protection of our community and school children, and provide the residents of Shelby County with the efficient and effective justice they deserve. My father worked over 30 years as a deputy sheriff protecting the streets of his community and I learned to respect the law at a young age. I worked my way through college and law school and opened a private law practice several years ago. I believe that inefficient and ineffective courts are a great threat to justice in our county. The court system is plagued by long delays and unexplained continuances that postpone, water down and deny justice. As judge, I will use my knowledge and experience as a court officer, attorney and business owner to bring efficient and effective justice to Shelby County.

Re-posting to make sure everyone sees this:

Thank you to all those who supported me in so many different ways during the past few months. I have learned a great deal about myself and this crazy game of politics during my rookie campaign. Congratulations to Danny Crowson on running a great race. He will do a fine job as the new district court judge for our county.

Til next time - Dave Roper

Do you know the last time a judge was elected to an open seat in Shelby County? Not re-elected or appointed by the governor, but elected to a true open position?

If you know for certain, I'd love for you to tell me. Most of the people I have asked can't recall, but the speculation is that it was over 20 years ago.

Typically, when Shelby County judge gets ready to retire, he does it a year or two before his term is up. A group of lawyers and businessmen then get together and submit names of replacement candidates to the governor who in turn appoints someone to the fill the spot. Then, the appointed judge runs as the incumbent in the next election - usually without opposition.

The people in this county rarely get to pick a judge, but this year you do. The incumbent judge is retiring at the end of his term and leaving the seat open, giving the people of Shelby County the rare opportunity to express their voice about who the next judge will be in an open seat election.

Your vote in the local election often has a direct impact on your daily life. I hope you will take advantage of this once in a generation opportunity and I hope you will choose me to fill the open seat - A New Voice for Shelby County!

Last week, in response to a former municipal judge in Shelby County asking if he was required to follow the Canons of Judicial Ethics (the rules judges must follow), the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission (the governing body for judges) issued an opinion which stated:

"The judge must exercise that authority to uphold the integrity, impartiality and independence of the judiciary and the court system . . . If the court cannot be maintained consistent with these canons, the judge cannot serve and there can be no court."

Here is a link to the opinion:http://media.al.com/opinion/other/JIC_Opinion_14_926(2).pdf

And, here is a link to my website. My #1 belief goes hand in hand with the statements made by the commission. http://www.daveroperforjudge.com/what-i-believe.html

Blogging Life: The Cancer Story

It is fitting that the campaign took us to the Brenda Ladun Conquer Cancer Run this weekend since today is the two year anniversary of me being diagnosed with cancer. Two years ago right now, I was semi-conscious and writhing in pain in a hospital bed recovering from major surgery. I was alive, but the future of my life was uncertain.

Cancer forced me to face my fears and fight for my life, and taught me that you may not have as much time as you think to get about the business of discovering and pursuing your purpose. Cancer reaffirmed my belief that God is in control and will be glorified.

I would not be the person I am today without cancer. I would not have the perspective I do about what is and is not important in this life without cancer. As strange as it may sound, I have come to view cancer as somewhat of a blessing. It broke me down, built me up and prepared me for service.

Elect Dave Roper

It seems like Amanda and I always encounter our major life events in even numbered years and then spend the odd numbered years catching our breath and regrouping and refocusing. To illustrate:

2004 - Wedding and Honeymoon
2006 - Open law practice on a shoestring and a prayer
2008 - Ella is born
2010 - Luke is born
2012 - Cancer, surgery, chemo, remission, etc.

Looks like 2014 will follow the same pattern. Your prayers and support are appreciated!

I grew up the son of a sheriff's deputy and developed a strong respect for the rule of law at an early age. I worked my way through college stocking shelves at a grocery store and worked as a probation officer while attending law school before opening my private law practice several years ago.
