The New York Wing is the statewide chapter of the Civil Air Patrol which is the official auxiliary of the U.S. We operate about a dozen of the 560 single-engine Cessna aircraft in the nation’s fleet and many more of the 2,000 strong drone fleet. Out of CAP’s 54,000 members nationwide, 2,200 of those call New York State home and over half of that number are our youth. We perform search and rescue,

homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, NY state and local agencies.

🚀 NY Wing Cadet Recognized at ISEF 2026

Congratulations to C/MSgt Saarth Nirmit Desai, who has been selected as a Finalist at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2026, the world’s leading high school STEM competition.

His project, “The Electromagnetic Transmission,” earned international recognition for its innovative research and engineering approach.

Congratulations to the newest graduates of Training Leaders of Cadets (TLC) – Basic!

On June 7, twelve senior members successfully completed the TLC-Basic course hosted by New York City Group. Held at Vaughn College, the hybrid course brought together members from across New York Wing, with two participants joining virtually from Maryland.

Training Leaders of Cadets (TLC) is a foundational course that prepares senior members to work effectively with cadets. The course focuses on mentoring youth, understanding the Cadet Program, fostering positive leadership development, and creating a safe, supportive environment where cadets can thrive.

Thank you to New York City Group for providing this valuable training opportunity and investing in the future of our cadets through well-trained adult leaders.

On Saturday June 6, New York City Group squadrons were joined by some neighbors from Long Island Group, South East Group and Connecticut Wing to support public outreach activities at Kiwanis Kids Day at La Guardia Airport. Civil Air Patrol provided static aircraft displays, explained CAP’s missions, helped with general flight line duties, and answered public questions about the aircraft on display.

This annual event is always well attended and is pivotal in our relationship with the New York City community.

The New York Wing Civil Air Patrol recognizes the recent Change of Command and Awards Ceremony at Putnam County Composite Squadron.

Presided over by Lt Col Louis Fenech, Maj Elena MacDermant relinquished command to 1st Lt Ryan Kemper, marking a successful leadership transition.

A major highlight was Cadet K. Lin’s appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

⭐ NYWG Staff Highlight – Meet the Wing Staff ⭐

Name & Rank: Maj Shawn Herrmann

Duty Position: Wing Aircraft Maintenance Officer (AMO), NYWG

Maj Herrmann joined Civil Air Patrol in 2001 as a cadet with NY-253 (FLG), where he earned the Ira C. Eaker Award and solo pilot wings through a CAP aviation scholarship. He has continued his CAP career with Syracuse NY-156, serving in multiple key roles including Mission Pilot, Chase Pilot, Check Pilot, Instructor Pilot, and Squadron Commander of the Mohawk Griffiss Senior Squadron. Since 2014, he has served as Wing Maintenance Officer, supporting aircraft readiness across New York Wing.

💬 What he enjoys most about CAP:

“The professional volunteers.”

Outside of CAP, Maj Herrmann is a corporate pilot and flight instructor.

He enjoys sailing and coaching soccer for his children.

New York Wing members traveled to Albany to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of Civil Air Patrol and were recognized on the floors of both the New York State Senate and Assembly.

Led by Major Joe Gallo, Vice Commander (North), and Lt. Col. Franklin Birt, New York Wing Government Relations Advisor, the delegation represented the thousands of CAP members who have served New York communities through emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs.
