Montgomery Township just issued the fooling memo: A SNOW EMERGENCY will go into effect in Montgomery Township at 6:00PM on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. All Snow Emergency Routes must be kept clear of parked or unattended vehicles during the emergency so that roads can be properly plowed. Please stay off of the roads if at all possible. Snow emergency routes can be viewed at www.montgomerytwp.org. Please stay safe. Because tonight's program was scheduled from 7-9pm and out of an abundance of concern for the safety of our members and guests, we have decided to CANCEL this evening's general meeting and reschedule at a later date. Please watch this page or our website: www.knappfarm.org for updated date and time.

VOTE!!!!! This is Florence Knapp (1873 - 1988) on her 100th birthday. A former school teacher, never married, she lived to be 114 years old, and obtained TWO Guiness World Records (one for oldest person in the world and another for living in the same home the longest - she still holds the second title). She was still an active voter in all elections, both local and national, for several more years after this photo was taken. Why was voting so important to her? In 1919, she was a suffragette, marching in Philadelphia with many, many other women carrying "Votes for Women!" signs. In Pennsylvania, and quite a few other states, women were not permitted to vote until after the 19th Amendment was ratified in August 1920. So, as you go into the voting booth today, say a little "thank you" to all those women who made it possible!

Hello everyone. Here are a couple of dates to mark on your calendars. The MTHS annual Holiday Party will be held Sunday December 4th at the Knapp house, as usual. All are welcome.

Also, Tuesday March 21st, we will have our annual membership meeting. If you didn't here Mike Jesberger, local historian and reenactor, speak at our last membership meeting, come out in March bc he will be back. His topic of discussion is undecided as of, but based on his knowledge of history and the role our local area has played in it, we're sure it will be fascinating and worthwhile.

Lastly, I apologize if you've tried to view photos on our website recently. Having some technical issues. I'm working on it. Please check back.

An intriguing story from our township's past profiled by our friends in the Lansdale Historical Society.

BACK THEN by DICK SHEARER

Ever yearn for a little cottage in the country? That’s what A. H. Moore, son of a wealthy Philadelphia businessman, wanted, so he talked daddy into paying for it, sight unseen. This was back in 1893. The son hoped to impress his rich friends and he certainly would have done so if this mansion had been built.
He enlisted Lansdale architect Milton B. Bean to design his humble shack which would have extended 320 feet on a tract at Bethlehem Pike and Richardson Road in Montgomery Township. Indeed, construction commenced on walls around the property, a guard house or two, a reflecting pond and several gardens.
However, when the bills started filtering in, dad discovered the scope of this project and pulled the plug before work began on what was known locally as the “Pink Palace”. Had it been built, the North Penn area would have had its very own version of the Biltmore Estate.
The entire tale of the Pink Palace requires more space than we have here, but you can read it in “Back in Time, Volume I” which is on sale at our research center and by mail. We’ll have more information on that in a few days.

Florence Knapp held the world record for oldest person in the world at the time of her death in 1988. Lisa Knapp-Siegel recently discovered that her Aunt Florence is still in the Guinness Book of World Records for living in the same house for 110 years. That's a record unlikely to be broken any time soon.
