🇺🇸 INDIANA VETERANS: YOUR CHILD MAY QUALIFY FOR COLLEGE TUITION ASSISTANCE!

Indiana’s Tuition and Fee Exemption program helps eligible children of disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients pay for college.

✅ Indiana public colleges and universities: Up to 100% of tuition and regularly assessed fees, calculated at undergraduate resident rates, for up to 124 semester credit hours.

✅ Indiana private, nonprofit colleges: Up to $5,000 annually toward tuition and regularly assessed fees for eligible students who graduated high school on or after January 1, 2023.

You DO NOT need a 100% VA disability rating for your child to qualify!

For eligible children of disabled veterans attending public colleges:

If the veteran initially enlisted BEFORE July 1, 2011, the benefit covers 100% of qualifying tuition and fees.

If the veteran initially enlisted ON OR AFTER July 1, 2011, coverage equals 20% plus the veteran’s VA disability percentage, capped at 100%. For example, a 50% disability rating means 70% coverage.

The veteran must have listed Indiana as their home of record when entering service OR lived in Indiana for at least five years before the student first applies. Students must first apply before their 33rd birthday. Additional military service, discharge, residency, and parent-child relationship requirements apply.

📝 HOW TO GET STARTED:
Apply through the student’s own ScholarTrack account and complete the FAFSA each year the benefit will be used.

White County veterans and families: Contact the White County Veterans Office for help reviewing eligibility and getting started.

We have proudly nominated Selina Scott, a kindergarten teacher in the Twin Lakes school system in Monticello, Indiana, for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Her dedication to her students, commitment to civic education, and willingness to keep improving make her an outstanding candidate for this recognition.

Selina’s impact extends beyond the children assigned to her classroom. She makes a lasting impression on the students she encounters, whether they are her own students or not. Her passion is evident in the effort she puts into finding new ways to teach and using the resources around her to enrich each child’s education.

One meaningful example was her invitation to the County Veteran Service Officer to visit her class for a Memorial Day lesson. She gave her young students an opportunity to ask questions and begin understanding the purpose of this important day: remembering the men and women who died while serving in our nation’s armed forces. Bringing a community resource into the classroom made the lesson more personal and connected learning with service, sacrifice, and remembrance.

This visit also reflects Selina’s resourcefulness. She draws on both the tools available within the school system and the knowledge and experience of people outside it. By welcoming community participation, she expands what her students can learn and helps establish an early connection between their classroom and the community they belong to.

Selina continually seeks innovative approaches that make learning meaningful for young children. Her commitment to improvement includes continuing her own education so she can have an even greater impact on her students and community. That investment demonstrates the seriousness with which she approaches her profession and her determination to keep growing as an educator.

Kindergarten is where children begin building the habits and understanding they will carry through school and into adulthood. Selina recognizes the importance of that foundation. Through her passion, creativity, community connections, and introduction of citizenship lessons at an early age, she exemplifies the qualities this award was created to recognize. We believe she deserves this honor for the lasting difference she makes in children’s lives.
