🌱 Why most seeding fails — and what we do differently

Here's something most homeowners never get told: when you throw grass seed on a lawn, only about 10% of it ever becomes grass.

The rest doesn't stand a chance. Seed needs to be in contact with soil to germinate. Sitting on top of the thatch, it's a free meal for birds, it blows into the street, and the first hard rain carries it into the storm drain. You paid for a bag of seed and fed the neighborhood sparrows.

That's why so many people tell us "I tried seeding, it didn't work." It's not that seeding doesn't work. It's that throwing seed doesn't work.

WHAT POWER SEEDING DOES INSTEAD

We use Lawn Doctor's Turf Tamer®. It meters seed evenly and works it down into direct contact with the soil, where it can actually germinate. Lawn Doctor's figures put that at over 90% germination versus roughly 10% for broadcasting.

And here's the part people care about most: it doesn't tear up the lawn you already have.

A lot of seeding equipment cuts grooves straight through your turf. If you've got a lawn that's thin but not dead, that's a hard thing to watch. The Turf Tamer uses a low-impact reciprocating action — it's designed to get seed into the soil without chewing up the healthy grass that's already growing.

THE SEED MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE MACHINE

We use premium turf-type tall fescue. That's not the same as the "contractor mix" in a lot of cheap seeding jobs, which leans heavily on annual ryegrass — it comes up fast and green in about six weeks, which looks great when the invoice is fresh, and then it dies in the first real heat of July. Tall fescue is bred for deep roots and heat tolerance. It's the difference between a lawn that looks good this October and a lawn that's still there in three years.

🌱 AUGUST LAWN WATCH — what we're seeing in Bergen County lawns this week

We've been walking a lot of properties over the past few days. Three things are showing up on almost every one. The photos here are all from local lawns.

1. LATE-SUMMER WEEDS ARE GOING TO SEED RIGHT NOW

Crabgrass, spotted spurge and nutsedge take over in August because heat and drought thin the good grass out and hand them the open ground. Here's the part most people miss: a crabgrass plant that's seeding this week is dropping thousands of seeds that will germinate in YOUR lawn next April. Pulling it in October is too late — the deposit's already made.

Nutsedge is the tough one. It's not actually a grass, so regular w**d control won't touch it, and it grows back from tubers underground. Most companies charge extra to treat it. We don't — it's included in our program.

2. SURFACE INSECTS ARE CHEWING ALONG THE HOT EDGES

Chinch bugs and sod webworm are active right now. Look along your curb, your driveway edge, and any south-facing slope — anywhere the sun bakes hardest. If that grass looks thin, straw-colored, and doesn't green up after you water it, that's usually not drought. That's feeding damage.

3. GRUBS START FEEDING IN THE NEXT 2–4 WEEKS

They're hatching right now, and they move down to the root zone in late August and September. Watch for turf that feels spongy underfoot, patches that peel back like a loose carpet, or skunks and birds tearing up your lawn overnight — they're digging for the grubs, and that's your early warning.

Grub damage is the one that gets expensive, because by the time you can see it, the roots are already gone and you're reseeding instead of treating.
