Could AI be the operational partner your EMS agency has been missing? πŸ€–
Meet Dale Chandler β€” one of our featured presenters at the NCAEMSA 2026 Summer Symposium!
🎯 Session: From Fear to Frontier: Leveraging AI for Efficient and Cost-Effective Pre-Hospital Care
🏷️ Track: Operations
As EMS demands rise and budgets tighten, agencies need innovative solutions to stay sustainable β€” but AI in medicine is often met with fear and skepticism. This presentation confronts that stigma head-on, shifting the narrative from "AI as a replacement" to "AI as an essential operational partner." Dale demystifies how artificial intelligence actually works in a prehospital setting and explores practical, real-world applications agencies can leverage today.
πŸ‘€ About Dale Chandler:
Dale Chandler has served as EMS Chief for Stanly County EMS since 2021, where he champions continuous professional development, formal education for first responders, and modern technology to drive data-backed operational decisions. A passionate advocate for industry excellence, Dale was among the second-ever group to earn the prestigious Certified Executive EMS Officer designation from the North Carolina Association of EMS Administrators.

Meet Joseph Zalkin β€” one of our featured presenters at the NCAEMSA 2026 Summer Symposium!
🎯 Session: Improving Rural Trauma Survival in Eastern North Carolina: A Data-Driven EMS Blood and Hemorrhage Control Strategy
🏷️ Track: Operations
Rural Eastern North Carolina faces a deadly combination β€” higher roadway fatality rates, extended transport times, and limited access to trauma centers. This presentation uses statewide crash fatality data and trauma system access patterns to identify geographic gaps where patients die from hemorrhagic shock before reaching definitive care. Joseph proposes a regional hub-and-spoke EMS blood deployment model with scoring and prioritization tools to strategically place prehospital blood transfusion resources where they will have the greatest impact.
πŸ‘€ About Joseph Zalkin:
Joseph Zalkin is a North Carolina native with 51 years of experience advancing emergency medical care. He serves as Executive Director of the Wake EMS Foundation and is co-founder and Executive Director of the NC EMS Regional Blood Coalition, which advocates for expanded prehospital use of blood products. He also leads the NC Consortium Against Responder Violence (CARVNC) and serves as an adjunct clinical instructor for the UNC School of Medicine EMS Fellowship Program. A 1981 graduate of the nation's first EMS baccalaureate program at Western Carolina University, Joseph holds the prestigious designation of Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Medical Services (FAEMS).

πŸ›οΈ Yesterday, the NCAEMSA Executive Committee took our mission to the halls of the NC General Assembly! Our leaders met with elected officials to champion the future of Emergency Medical Services across North Carolina.

From workforce recruitment and retention to stronger protections for our providers on the front lines β€” we showed up and spoke up for EMS. Key priorities we're pushing this session:

βœ… Competitive pay and benefits to recruit and keep top EMS talent
βœ… Stronger criminal penalties for assaults against EMS workers
βœ… 25-year retirement benefits recognizing the demands of this profession
βœ… Formal classification of EMS as Essential Services
βœ… Expanded Mobile Integrated Healthcare and Community Paramedicine
βœ… Better Medicaid reimbursement for the care we provide

North Carolina's EMS community deserves a seat at the table β€” and we made sure we had one yesterday. Thank you to every legislator who took the time to listen. The work continues! πŸ’ͺ

This keynote is a roadmap for building smarter systems, healthier cultures, and better outcomes.

πŸ‘€ About Dr. Crowe:
Dr. Remle Crowe's path to EMS research took a scenic route β€” starting as a volunteer EMT with the Red Cross in Mexico City while engineering powertrains at Ford Motor Company, where she earned a Six Sigma Black Belt in quality improvement. Now Senior Director of Research at ESO, she leads innovative projects harnessing data to improve community health and safety outcomes, with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications to her name.
