The idea for OpenGates was hatched on a pheasant hunting trip in southwest Minnesota in the fall of 2015. The balance of our day was spent in the car, not the field, driving from one small plot of public land to another, only to find them crowded and over-hunted. Surrounded by private land, but with no way of knowing how to get permission to hunt it, we thought there must be a better way! The miss

ion of OpenGates is to do just that; to create an online community where hunters can pay landowners for access to their land, while sharing the old fashioned principles of integrity, trust, and conservation that we all value so much.

A long growing season this year meant corn stayed up late, and excellent pheasant hunting was just a little delayed. But now December 1 is upon us and the daily limit goes up to 3 birds per day. The good news is we won't have icicles on our face like this hunt from a few years ago!
