Here is a photo of the Caernarvon Twp., Berks Co. War Memorial which is located at the Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537 in Joanna.
The second picture is a photograph of Col. Jacob Morgan’s gravestone at St.Thomas Episcopal Church in Morgantown. This photograph is included in a recent set of photos donated to the library.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. In the late 1860s, people would decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with flags and flowers. (Union General John A. Logan called for an official nationwide day of remembrance on 5/30/1868). After WWI, the holiday honored all fallen members of the American Armed Forces. But it wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday.
We are still collecting information on local veterans especially of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. If you have any photographs, records, etc. to add to our military collection please contact us at 610-286-7477 or by email at [email protected].
