🌙 Luna, Mount Airy City Schools Artemis I Moon Tree Update! 🌳

Did you know Luna is not just any tree? She is an Artemis I Moon Tree! 🚀 As a seed, she traveled around the Moon aboard NASA’s Artemis I aboard the Orion capsule before returning to Earth to be planted at JJ Jones Intermediate School! Artemis I was NASA’s first mission in the Artemis program, designed to help prepare for future missions to return astronauts to the Moon. 🌕

Luna was planted in November 2024 on International STEM Day as a small young tree, only about 3 feet tall.

Luna's Progress:
📏 Grew from 3 feet to 5 feet 1/2 feet since May 2025
🌳 Trunk grew from 1/4 inch to 1.25 inches
🍃 Grew a full, round canopy of leaves this year

🏀🎉 Not much beats the end-of-the-year fun at Mount Airy Middle School!

Students and staff had a blast cheering on participants in the Staff vs. 8th Grade Basketball Game. This longstanding tradition was packed with energy, laughter, and plenty of friendly competition from both teams. 🔥

In the end, the M**S staff held on to their winning streak and will look to defend their title again next year! 🏆😎

At the end of the school year, Mrs. Katy O’Neal and the MAHS FCCLA Club sponsored a visit by Miss NC, Sophia Kellstrom, to Mount Airy City Schools.

While here, Miss NC spoke on empowerment to M**S female students, presented her “Make a Change” presentation to 1st graders, and filled blessing boxes at BHT and MAHS as part of her fighting food insecurity platform.

⛪ Acting as the big finale for the M**S 6th grade Greek Unit, students traveled to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church to spend time at their annual Greek Festival. Students celebrated Greek culture by trying foods, enjoying music, and dance performances. They also toured the beautiful church to learn more about its history. 💙🤍

We are certain this will be a trip to remember for students.
