On this day in 2006, Sgt. 1st Class Randy McCaulley of the 1-110th Infantry made the ultimate sacrifice after being wounded in action in Iraq. Today, we honor his memory and his service to our nation.

Sgt. 1st Class McCaulley was the 24th soldier from the Pennsylvania National Guard to be killed in action in Iraq. He was remembered by those who served with him as someone who kept morale high, often cracking jokes to lighten the mood.

As we mark this 20-year anniversary, we honor the profound sacrifice of Sgt. 1st Class Randy D. McCaulley and remember a man who dedicated his life to his nation and his family

During the opening days of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, the 110th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division was tasked with an impossible mission: holding the vital road hub of Clervaux against the full weight of the 2nd Panzer Division. Spread dangerously thin, the Keystone soldiers turned the picturesque town and its medieval castle into a fortress, engaging in a desperate, house-to-house struggle against German tanks. This Alamo-style stand was a masterpiece of delaying actions; by refusing to surrender the bridges and high ground, the 28th Division bought the Allied High Command the precious hours needed to rush the 101st Airborne to Bastogne. While the defenders at Clervaux were eventually overwhelmed and many taken prisoner, their sacrifice fundamentally derailed the German timetable and saved the American line from total collapse.

On December 16, 1944, the 1st Battalion, 110th Infantry Regiment, part of the 28th Infantry Division , found itself at the epicenter of the German Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge), facing overwhelming German forces in Luxembourg; they initiated a legendary, desperate defense along the Our River, buying crucial time for Allied reserves, particularly the 101st Airborne in Bastogne, to arrive, making their stand one of the most significant delaying actions in US military history, despite being outnumbered and outgunned.

Today, December 13, 2025, marks the 389th birthday of the National Guard. This date traces back to December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony's General Court organized the colony's existing militias into three permanent regiments (the North, South, and East Regiments) for better defense. These units are considered the oldest in the U.S. military, with direct descendants still active today in the Massachusetts Army National Guard, such as the 101st Engineer Battalion, 101st Field Artillery Regiment, 181st Infantry Regiment, and 182nd Infantry Regiment.

Team 312 (SSG Hager and SGT Gillin) spent their last full day of the 55th WPW and 35th AFSAM Sniper Championships competing in multiple matches at Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center, Arkansas, Dec. 10, 2025. Each event challenged each team's precision, movement, decision-making, and reconnaissance — proving why versatility defines a true sniper.
