Unions have the capacity to build working class power and raise wages for everyone through the strategy of solidarity bargaining. Rank-and-file led and coordinated bargaining, across plants, companies and industries, is a way to overcome divisions within the working class and increase living standards across the board. This is in the interest of each individual union because so long as workers and workplaces are divided and bargaining is atomized, power remains more in the hands of the owners and managers who can then more easily chip away at gains made in previous rounds of bargaining.

What is capitalism? As socialists, we want to transform the world into one that is just, with freedom and equality for all. But rather than begin with the world as we want it to be, we must start with the world as it is, because the state of the world constrains our options and defines the means available to us to create a better world.

Most of us (indeed, the vast majority) are workers, and that means we already have first-hand experience of capitalism: the deprivations, the instability, the compulsion to sacrifice hours and hours every day to work for someone else. First, we must understand that these are not individual or unique problems, but problems shared by the whole working class.

Capitalism is a form of economic production based on social relations between capitalists, workers, and landlords. In England, the transition from feudalism to capitalism involved enclosures of the commons, privatizing the land and pushing former peasants toward the cities where manufacturers needed a growing labor market. This is a system that requires and perpetuates unequal ownership of property, and therefore class, such that most of us just get by while society's wealth is accumulated in the hands of the few (e.g., Elon Musk). When a capitalist enters the market, they have capital already in hand ready to purchase labor and productive equipment and materials with the goal of gaining more money. When a landlord enters the market, they have land already in hand ready to rent. When a wage-worker enters the market, they do so with their capacity to work. They sell their capacity in order to get what they need to survive.

However, capitalism cannot be fully understood just by looking at experiences that are common to all workers. This is because capitalists rely upon dividing the working class to maintain their control: while collectively we are powerful, divided we are weak.

Hey, Mount Pleasant!

June 19th, this Friday, will be the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Island Park! For those of you who don't know the history of Juneteenth, let me educate you:

Juneteenth, officially known as "Juneteenth National Independence Day," is a celebration of Black freedom from the evil clutches of slavery that America subjected African Americans to for hundreds of years. It has also been called Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day.

So what happened? On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger gave what would become the final order enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, effectively ending non-prison-related slavery. From then on, Black communities have celebrated and championed Juneteenth in their homes, communities, and churches. It took over 130 years for the federal government to finally recognize the celebration and turn it into a federal holiday.

Today, we continue to celebrate Black independence, but we cannot forget the reality we live in. While chattel slavery is illegal, slavery still exists in the form of state-sanctioned forced labor. The 13th Amendment was written with a loophole allowing anyone convicted of a crime, regardless of the offense, to be forced into labor as "punishment."
These archaic practices must be abolished.

Slavery is one of the greatest evils our species has created, and its continued perpetuation must be stopped.
