SHOOTING INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred this evening in the Neva community.

Johnson County 911 received a call regarding the incident at approximately 7:30 p.m. One individual is currently being treated at a local hospital.

Investigators are actively working to gather all facts and information surrounding the incident. The findings of the investigation will be reviewed by the District Attorney General’s Office.

At this time, there is no threat to public safety, and all individuals involved have been identified.

We will provide additional information as it becomes available and as the investigation allows.

We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as our investigators continue their work.

Congratulations to Sheriff Shawn “Bit” Brown as he officially took his Oath of Office as the newly elected Sheriff of Johnson County. We are proud to celebrate this important occasion and wish Sheriff Brown the very best as he begins his service and leadership in this new role.
We also want to congratulate his selection for Chief Deputy, Cody Ingle who was also sworn in yesterday. Sheriff Brown and Chief Deputy Ingle were both joined by the family and friends for the momentous occasion.
Additionally, all School Resource Officer and Deputies were sworn in this morning, all sharing the promise to faithfully serve, uphold the law, and protect our community.

PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER: PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU SHOOT

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone to use extreme caution when handling and firing fi****ms, especially in areas where homes and other occupied structures are nearby.

Recently, deputies responded to a report of a projectile striking a residence and causing property damage. A neighboring residence also reported damage to a vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

A bullet fired into the air does not simply disappear. What goes up must come down — and you have no control over where it lands.

Before firing a firearm, make sure you know your target, what is beyond it, and what is around it. Never shoot toward a residence, roadway, occupied area, or into the air.

A moment of carelessness can result in serious injury, death, or significant property damage.

Johnson County Sheriff's Office Conducts "Operation Mountain Safeguard" Compliance Check
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the U.S. Marshals Service, recently conducted a countywide compliance operation to verify that registered s*x offenders residing in Johnson County are adhering to all requirements of the Tennessee S*x Offender Registry.
The operation, named Operation Mountain Safeguard, was conducted on Monday and Tuesday, July 27-28, 2026, at the request of Johnson County Sheriff's Office Investigator and S*x Offender Registry (SOR) Officer Doug McGlamery. The purpose of the operation was to perform random compliance checks to ensure registered offenders were abiding by all applicable laws, rules, and registration requirements.
The results of Operation Mountain Safeguard are as follows:
• Registered offenders contacted in person: 18
• Registered offenders not contacted in person: 4
• Compliant after verification: 19
• Non-compliant: 3
• Arrests made: 3
The four offenders who were not contacted in person were successfully contacted through other means and were determined to be in compliance with all S*x Offender Registry requirements.
The following individuals were arrested during the operation:
• James Grayson – Felon in Possession of a Firearm
• Christopher Watt – Felon in Possession of a Firearm
• Daniel Myers – Failure to Report Electronic Identifiers (Violation of the Tennessee S*x Offender Registry)
Additionally, on July 29, 2026, Douglas Raymond Pickett was arrested and charged with Aggravated S*xual Exploitation of a Minor. While this arrest occurred during the same time period, Pickett was not among the registered offenders included in Operation Mountain Safeguard and was not part of this compliance initiative.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office remains committed to protecting our community by ensuring registered s*x offenders comply with state laws and registration requirements. The Sheriff's Office will continue working alongside its state and federal law enforcement partners to conduct periodic compliance checks and pursue enforcement action when violations are identified.
Sheriff Clifton Worley stated, "The safety of our citizens, especially our children, remains one of our highest priorities. Operations like Mountain Safeguard demonstrate our commitment to holding offenders accountable and working closely with our law enforcement partners to keep Johnson County a safe place to live."

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office have been made aware of a scam in which an individual is falsely identifying themselves as an employee at the Watauga County, NC Sheriff's Office, accusing victims of failing to report to jury duty and incurring fines. Please be advised this is a scam. If you receive a call or message, do not provide personal information, or send any money.

Today, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was honored to receive a visit from a representative of Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger’s office, who presented Sheriff Clifton Worley Jr. with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in acknowledgment of his outstanding dedication to public safety.

This recognition was presented as part of National Police Week, and was awarded to sheriffs across the State of Tennessee in appreciation of their service and commitment to the communities they serve.

Sheriff Worley is grateful for this recognition and extends his appreciation to the men and women of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office whose hard work, professionalism, and dedication make such achievements possible.

We thank Congresswoman Harshbarger’s office for recognizing the efforts of law enforcement officers throughout Tennessee and for their continued support of public safety.
