There are currently 22 confirmed cases of Measles in Iowa. Measles is highly contagious, but vaccination provides strong protection. Trinity Muscatine Public Health is offering the MMR vaccine at no cost to everyone, regardless of insurance status. Not sure if you or your family members are up to date? Summertime is for barbeques and picnics!

Keep everyone safe and healthy at your celebrations by being aware of food temperatures. If you’re having a barbeque, be aware of how long cooked items have been sitting and remember to wash your hands to avoid becoming sick from food poisoning.

Ticks and mosquitoes are no fun when you’re outside having summer fun! Both ticks and mosquitos can possibly make you sick if you get one of their bites.

There are ways that you can protect yourself, your family and friends from bites this summer:
* Use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent. When used as directed, they are effective.
* Wear loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs.
* Get rid of standing water – like rainwater that might have collected in something in the yard. Mosquitoes might use this to breed so make sure to dump any access water.

It seems like summer is over with area schools starting next week. However, we know that warmer weather likes to stick around! Over the next couple of days we will be sharing information on how to keep you and your family safe while enjoying the warm weather!

Drowning can occur within seconds and is often silent. Parents and caregivers should:
* Provide close, constant and distraction-free supervision whenever children are near water, including bathtubs.
* Designate a specific adult as the “water watcher.”
* Use properly fitted life jackets around natural water and while boating; inflatable toys are not safety devices.
* Install four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates around home pools.
* Enroll children in age-appropriate swimming and water-safety lessons.
* Learn CPR and choose swimming locations with lifeguards when possible.

Swimming ability, life jackets and lifeguards add layers of protection, but none replaces attentive adult supervision.

We have two opportunities coming up to talk about vaccines with our amazing, registered nurses!

🍎 The 5th Annual Back to School Clinic is THIS THURSDAY! Our nurses will be available to check your child's immunization record and make sure they are up to date on vaccines and ready to go back to school.

🍏 We are having a vaccine clinic here at Public Health next Tuesday August 11th. Appointments are filling up fast, so if your child needs immunizations please call and schedule an appointment!
