NEWS RELEASE: U.S. Coast Guard Academy Graduation – Traffic and Parking Restrictions

NEW LONDON, CT – The New London Police Department wishes to inform the public of traffic restrictions and road closures in connection with the United States Coast Guard Academy's 146th Commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

EVENT DETAILS

After four years of rigorous study and training to become the finest officers possible, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2026 will graduate on May 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 31 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320.

President Donald J. Trump will serve as the keynote speaker for this ceremony. The commencement is not open to the public.

PARKING RESTRICTIONS AND ROAD CLOSURES

In consideration of security and public safety requirements for this event, the following parking restrictions will be in effect:

NO PARKING on the following streets beginning at 5:00 a.m. on May 20, 2026:

• River Ridge Road
• Deshon Street
• Nameaug Avenue
• Oneco Avenue
• Farnsworth Street
• Wi******er Road
• Uncas Avenue
• Williams St. under 95 overpass
• Williams St. between Briggs St. and Gordon St.
• Crystal Ave. from 309 Crystal Ave. to Williams St.
• Riverside Heights Rd.
• Route 32 Northbound or Southbound

NO PARKING SIGNS WILL BE POSTED. These restrictions will remain in effect until later in the day at the discretion of the New London Police Department. Parking tickets will be issued and vehicles will be towed.

Riverside Park will be closed to the public beginning at 5:00 a.m. on May 20, 2026, and will remain closed until later in the day at the discretion of the New London Police Department.

DESIGNATED PUBLIC ASSEMBLY AREAS

Members of the public will be permitted to assemble at the following locations only:

1. McKinley Park – Located at the corner of Williams Street and
Crystal Avenue

2. Grass parcel on Williams Street – Just past the overpass
(Williams Street/Briggs Street)

DESIGNATED PRESS/MEDIA ASSEMBLY AREA (Must be on-site prior to 9 a.m.)

1. Grass parcel across from the USCGA main gate – In front of
the fence

Individuals will not be permitted to congregate past the main gate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

IMPORTANT SAFETY AND SECURITY NOTICE

For the safety and security of all attendees and the public, individuals who wish to assemble in the designated areas must adhere to the following restrictions:

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE PROHIBITED:

• Full masks or face-covering items of any sort
• Signs utilizing sticks and/or posts
• Backpacks and/or bags
• Amplified noise devices (unless a City of New London permit is
on file for said date/event)
• Sticks or posts of any sort

Failure to comply with these restrictions may result in removal from the area and/or criminal charges.

NOTE: Traffic and travel may be extended at different intervals during the day.

The New London Police Department appreciates the public's cooperation and understanding as we work to ensure a safe and secure environment for this important event.

The water is still very cold in New England. Important Hypothermia timeline shown in the photo below. Don’t forget to pull your knees up to your chest to help keep/save heat while in the water. Wear your PFD with a Whistle. Try to get back on the Paddlecraft, even if it’s upside down to minimize time in the cold water.
