🔥On the Wildcat Fire, our crews have been working hard to keep firefighters safe. We’ve been cutting down hazardous snags (dead or unstable trees) that could fall and threaten crews on the line.
🌲First, we remove dangerous trees ahead of the fire to reduce risks before it arrives. Then, once an area has burned and mop-up begins, we return to take out any burned-out snags so ground crews can work safely.
🏠 Removing snags not only keeps roads open — it also allows firefighters to safely engage remaining heat and hotspots in the area. Without this work, suppression crews face dangerous conditions that limit their ability to fully contain and control fire activity near infrastructure.
🚧 We’re utilizing a Heavy Equipment Task Force for the snag removal that includes feller bunchers and log loaders.
⚠👷‍♀️ Safety is always our top priority, and every snag we remove makes the fireline a safer place for those on the ground.

Wildcat Fire Update- Friday, October 3, 2025- 1:30 pm

Size: 14,500 acres
Incident start date: August 25, 2025
Containment: 5%
Cause: Lightning
Location: Near Bumping Lake in the William O. Douglas Wilder. 30 miles northwest of Naches, Washington in Yakima County
Fuels: Timber (litter and understory)
Total Personnel: 20

Current situation:
The fire has not received a heavy amount of moisture and has grown approximately 1000 acres to the northeast over the past four days. Some of this acreage is due to planned firing operations adjacent to the Bumping River Road to treat pockets of unburnt fuel (down wood, grass, and understory) to add depth and to strengthen the containment line.

Today and Saturday: Crews are continuing to work on the un-burnt pockets of fuel on the West side of Goose Prairie down to Wells Road. They are also bringing fire down to the Bumping River Road on the east side of Goose Prairie, working east to the area across from Cougar Flats. Structure protection operations along Bumping River Road include Edge Water cabins and Ski Bowl Lodge. Structure protection operations on SR-410 include the FS cabin tracts, American River, Idle Hour and Sleepy Hollow.

**Fire information updates will occur as significant changes or increased fire activity happens.

REMINDER: If you fly a drone, we can’t fly! Operating a drone near a wildfire poses a serious risk to firefighter lives and delays suppression efforts.

Weather and Fire Activity: Unsettled, showery weather will continue through Saturday. Excellent overnight relevant humidity recovery is forecast. Anticipated northwesterly winds Friday, increasing in magnitude late in the afternoon. Partly cloudy conditions, with a high near 61. 50% chance of rain. Moderate fire spread expected. Fire behavior will be flanking and backing affected by afternoon winds.

Containment: 6% Cause: Lightning
Location: Near Bumping Lake in the William O. Douglas Wilderness, 30 miles northwest of Naches, Washington in Yakima County
Fuels: Timber (litter and understory)Total Personnel: 116

Current situation:
Given the fire growth to the northeast due to lack of moisture received over the past weekend, fire managers will keep the current organization and adjust staffing as needed in coming days. With the increase in cloud cover, high relative humidities and moisture over the last 24-hours, combined with clear skies in the afternoon on Tuesday, the fire experienced little growth with smoldering and creeping.

Today: An active weather pattern will continue to make for chances of periodic, scattered showers over the next few days. Rainfall amounts are expected to vary over relatively short distances. There is a low-end chance for an isolated thunderstorm to impact the sites. Generally light SW Winds are expected, with drier weather expected by late Thursday. Firefighters are working on prep work and suppression activities around Goose Prairie. Air operations and bucket work continue to slow the spread to the north, east and south.

**After today fire information updates will occur as significant changes or increased fire activity happens.

REMINDER: If you fly a drone, we can’t fly! Operating a drone near a wildfire poses a serious risk to firefighter lives and delays suppression efforts.

Weather and Fire Activity: Rain showers likely. It is partly sunny, with a high near 57. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Little to moderate fire spread is expected. Unless Fire receives moisture, we can anticipate single tree torching, in additional to flanking and backing affected by the afternoon winds.

Wildcat fire Sept 27 update
Current situation:

Yesterday: The fire grew by approximately 700 acres, advancing north past Sunrise Creek and is at present, continuing on a northeast path. Fire behavior is anticipated to slow near Goose Prairie but continue backing and creeping down the mountain and stop at the dozer line. Additional growth was also present at Lily Lake. A helicopter dropped water to the northeast and southwest of Bumping Lake to control fire movement. Warm and dry weather coupled with lower humidity contributed to fire growth yesterday.

Today: Fire weather will be moderate compared to the past four days with hot and dry conditions slightly reducing daily average gains. Fire behavior is likely to be smoldering, surface burning, along with some single and multi-tree torching.

Crews continue improving existing fire lines monitoring for hot spots around cabins and the marina area. Throughout today's shift, resources will continue to work along the Bumping Lake Road removing fuel and improving future containment lines.

Southeast Washington Incident Management Team 1 will be transitioning to the local Naches Ranger District IMT on Monday, Sept 29, 2025. The fire will continue to have resources assigned to manage the ongoing operations and efforts to protect the values in proximity to the fire. Fire information updates will occur if significant changes or increased fire activity happens after that date.

REMINDER: If you fly a drone, we can’t fly! Operating a drone near a wildfire poses a serious risk to firefighter lives and delays suppression efforts.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Hot and dry weather with low humidity through Sunday. Late Sunday night into Monday morning, a weather system looks to move in off the coast, bringing possible showers, mainly across the Cascade Crest, before more widespread rainfall pushes into the region Monday night. From there, on and off showers look to continue through most of the upcoming week with a much more active and wetter pattern expected. Fire activity is expected to decrease.
