Good Evening,

Due to the forecasted weather conditions for tomorrow morning, the Nahant Memorial Day Committee has implemented the Inclement Weather Protocol for the 2026 Nahant Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies.

The 11:00 AM Memorial Day Ceremony WILL be held indoors at Nahant Town Hall.

The Memorial Day Parade WILL still occur with any willing participants unless weather conditions tomorrow morning become unsafe.

At this time, the plan is as follows:

Willing parade participants should continue to report to the Lowlands area in the morning as previously scheduled.

A limited marching contingent and Sea Services Ceremony at Tudor Wharf may proceed depending on real-time weather conditions.

All other participants, guests, residents, bands, veterans, and attendees should proceed directly to Nahant Town Hall for the 11:00 AM Ceremony.

The ceremony at Town Hall will include:

Invocation and Benediction

Recognition of Veterans and honored guests

Governor’s Memorial Day Proclamation

Recitation of the Gettysburg Address

Reading of the names of deceased Veterans

Rifle salute, Taps, and Navy Hymn

Raising of the Colors to full staff

We appreciate the flexibility, professionalism, and continued commitment of all organizations and volunteers supporting Nahant’s Memorial Day observance. Most importantly, we remain committed to appropriately honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Any additional updates tomorrow morning will be distributed through Town communication channels.

All are invited to gather at the Nahant Life Saving Station beginning at approximately 12:15pm, where the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and the Town of Nahant will host a community collation in honor and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, while also providing an opportunity for fellowship and community following the Memorial Day ceremonies.

Please let me know if you have any questions
Respectfully,

Bob Fields
Veterans' Service Officer

Urgent volunteer request for Memorial Day.

I absolutely need four volunteers to help with the sound systems at Greenlawn Cemetery and the Wharf ceremonies. We need help Sunday afternoon with setup, and Monday morning with operation and breakdown following the ceremonies.

Please check out the video for details. I want everyone to know this is very easy to operate. If you can use an iPhone or Facebook, you can handle this equipment.

Even if you are marching in the parade, you can still help because the sound systems are only needed while we are at the ceremony locations.

Please message me ASAP if you can step up and help support Nahant’s Memorial Day observances. Thank you.

Thank you to the Lynn Item for highlighting Nahant’s upcoming Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies and the many volunteers, Veterans, students, public safety personnel, and community members helping make this important tradition possible.

This year’s observance will once again bring our community together in remembrance of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. From the Sea Service Ceremony at the Town Wharf to the main ceremony at Greenlawn Cemetery, Memorial Day in Nahant reflects the deep respect our town continues to show for our fallen heroes and their families.

We are especially proud of the continued involvement of our youth, educators, Veterans organizations, and volunteers who help preserve these traditions for future generations.

We encourage all residents and visitors to join us on Memorial Day as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.

NAHANT — Nahant will continue one of its most enduring traditions on Memorial Day as residents, veterans, students, first responders, and community organizations gather to honor the people who died in service to the United States during the town’s annual Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies. As we continue building the Nahant Veteran Support Volunteers network, I ask local professionals, businesses, nonprofits, faith organizations, and individuals to consider how you may be able to help Veterans in our community.

Support does not always mean taking on a full case or long-term commitment. Sometimes the most valuable assistance is simply helping the Veterans Service Officer understand:
• What options may exist
• What organization may help
• What resources are realistic
• What pitfalls to avoid
• Whether there are faster paths to support

One of the challenges I am finding is that many of the best-known support organizations and programs are operating with long waiting lists, staffing shortages, or eligibility limitations that delay meaningful assistance to Veterans and families in need.

Because of that, I am hoping to build relationships with professionals who may be willing to:
• Provide occasional guidance or recommendations
• Answer questions within their area of expertise
• Help identify alternative resources
• Offer referrals to trusted providers
• Occasionally provide direct volunteer or pro bono support when possible

Areas of need may include:
Legal • Healthcare • Mental Health • Housing • Elder Services • Financial Guidance • Technology • Insurance • Transportation • Home Repairs • Employment Assistance • Disability Navigation • Family Support • Food Stability • Veteran Benefits Guidance • and more.

If you cannot personally help but know someone or an organization that may be willing to assist, those introductions are equally valuable.

Our Veterans often do not need miracles. They need direction, advocacy, and people willing to help them navigate systems that can be confusing and slow.

Today we remember the crew of the USS Scorpion (SSN-589), lost at sea on May 22, 1968, along with all 99 Sailors aboard.

The loss of Scorpion remains one of the most solemn tragedies in U.S. Navy submarine history. These men served in silence, beneath the sea, during one of the most dangerous periods of the Cold War. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom has always carried unseen risks and quiet acts of courage.

As a Navy Submarine Veteran, I ask our community to pause today to remember the families, shipmates, and generations of submariners who continue to carry their memory forward.

“Still on Patrol.”

May we never forget the crew of Scorpion and all those who gave their lives in service to our nation beneath the waves.

Eight events are key to trying to understand what happened to the Skipjack-class submarine that sank in 1968.
