Friends of the Napa Open Space District

Friends of the Napa Open Space District Friends of the Napa Open Space District is dedicated to sharing the parks and trails of Napa County that are managed by the Napa Open Space District.

In November of 2006 Napa County voters approved Measure I establishing the Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District. The District is authorized to plan, improve and operate a system of public parks, trails, outdoor recreational facilities, and outdoor science and conservation education programs, as well as to protect and preserve natural areas, wildlife habitat and other open space resour

ces. Its jurisdiction includes all of Napa County. The District is governed by a Board of Directors whose members are directly elected by the public in each of five wards. Ward boundaries coincide with the County’s Board of Supervisors’ districts. Funding and staffing for the District currently comes from the County of Napa, at the level determined by the County Board of Supervisors. The District is also empowered to obtain grants, accept gifts and collect fees for services provided. Subject to voter approval, the District is authorized to raise revenues through some types of property assessments and taxes. The District has no power to regulate private land use, is subject to all applicable city and county regulations, and may only acquire property from willing sellers.

This week, CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit performed a large and successful prescribed burn operation on our Woodbury Preserve/Spanish Valley property near Berryessa Estates. Prescribed burns like this one help protect nearby communities and make us all more resilient to future fires, and play a vital part in restoring and stewarding our natural open spaces.

Enormous thanks and credit to our friends and partners at the Land Trust of Napa County for all of their work coordinating this project, and of course to Cal FIRE for their expertise and attention to detail & safety while they executed this operation.

Check out CAL FIRE's video below to learn more about the work and planning that goes into these Rx burns to ensure everyone's safety from start to finish.

Time outdoors is good for reflection, remembrance, and celebration of what connects us all. Hopefully today’s Juneteenth holiday offers you a chance for some outside time in nature as we commemorate the day that the last enslaved people of the United States learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Even more fresh tracks getting laid down in Suscol Headwaters Park!

It’s hard to keep the maps up to date with all the trail activity happening in this special place. There’s a new trail map posted to the Suscol Headwaters page, miles of scenic trails already in place with more coming every month it seems.

Please respect the trails that are blocked off while our crews work on their construction. While they're being built, there are safety hazards you may not see and traffic on the unfinished trailbed can cause damage. We promise, we'll get them open as quickly as humanly possible!

If you haven’t seen the park map recently, check it out at NapaOutdoors.org/Suscol-Headwaters-Park/

Swallowtail Butterfly – just basking, so beautiful.
Too mature to have just hatched from chrysalis and be drying out, just soaking up the sun, and maybe a little moisture from the mud.

NOSD trail staff met some local caballeros at the top of the world at Suscol Headwaters Park and had an impromptu photo shoot on a recent gorgeous day.

The group are regular park users and shared their love of the trails in Suscol Headwaters and some of their favorite routes while the horses got some extra love from our staff in the sunshine. One of the best parts of our workdays is stopping to chat with all of you while you’re out enjoying the trails and learning about the trails and spots you love most.

Last summer we opened up our Junior Ranger program for one day to The Adults, and they, and we, had so much fun that we plan to do it again. So, if you’re tired of all the adulting in your life, join us for a hike and some creek exploration that might just make you feel like you’re six or seven years old again.

This hike is designed for little legs so it’s an easy stroll with plenty of time at Ritchey Creek to learn more about the natural world. We’ve advertised it enough for you to know we aren’t kidding and are in fact serious about this *adults only* event.

If all that sounds good, come join us for the activities, say the pledge, and earn your young at heart badge.
