COVID-19 booster shots will soon be available for the more than 155 million people in the U.S. who have been fully vaccinated with messenger RNA vaccines.

Starting on Sept. 20, people aged 65 and older, individuals in chronic-care facilities and health workers, along with anyone else who was vaccinated first, are expected to get boosters initially, in accordance with guidance from leaders of the FDA, The National Institutes of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Biden administration called for a third shot for Americans who were fully vaccinated with the two-shot regimen, citing the threat from the Delta variant.

In honor of #PrideMonth, we are honoring the life and celebrating the work of Judith Bradford, Ph.D., an #LGBTQ ally and pioneer of #healthdisparity research on LGBTQ people.

Nearly 30 years before the U.S. Institute of Medicine released its 2011 landmark report on LGBTQ health, Dr. Bradford had already played a key role in one of the first community research studies of HIV/AIDS among gay men. Addressing health disparities across the LGBTQ population would become her life’s work.

Dr. Bradford was the first scientist to head an NIMHD-funded, LGBTQ-focused population studies center – The Fenway Institute (TFI), which she co-chaired since its inception in 2001. Her work has improved the lives of those whose minority status often makes their needs unseen or disregarded.

The Impact If the Medicare Eligibility Age Is Lowered to 60

One of President Biden’s election promises to lower the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 60 is beginning to gain traction.

Those who support the proposal say that expanding Medicare will improve affordable insurance access to more than 20 million people in the United States.

A study says a lower Medicare eligibility age might not reduce costs for everyone, but some experts say it could help those in lower-income households.

In and out of lockdown, LGBTQ+ youth are more at risk for depression and su***de than their heterosexual peers.

“There’s not something inherent to being LGBTQ that causes these greater needs of mental health challenges and su***de risk,” emphasized Dr. Amy Green, the vice president of research for The Trevor Project and the licensed clinical psychologist who oversaw the survey, who pointed to outside stressors like discrimination and stigma as contributing factors. #PrideMonth

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued new guidelines that recommended colon cancer screening start at age 45 instead of age 50.

Although roughly 90% of colorectal cancer cases happen in people over age 50, cases of colorectal cancer have been rising in adults younger than 50, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Margaret “Mom” Chung was the first Chinese American woman to become a physician. After graduating from the University of Southern California Medical School in 1916 and completing her internship and residency in Illinois, she established one of the first Western medical clinics in San Francisco's Chinatown in the early 1920s.

During World War II, she and her widespread network of “adopted sons,” most of them American soldiers, sailors, and airmen who called her “Mom,” became famous. Dr. Chung used her influence to support the Allied war effort and lobbied for the creation of the WAVES, the U.S. Naval Women’s Reserve. #DrMargaretChung #AAPIHeritageMonth

Dr. David Ho is a Taiwanese-American AIDS researcher, physician, and virologist who has made many scientific contributions to understanding and treating HIV infection.

His HIV research in the 1990s also shed light on how the virus replicates. That research transformed HIV/AIDS from a death sentence to a chronic but manageable condition. Now he's working to develop a drug that can interrupt the coronavirus's ability to replicate, which, if successful, could lead to a treatment for COVID-19.

Dr. Ho was named Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1996 and was the recipient of a Presidential Medal in 2001.
