We're excited to name Joe and Lisa Capps as our Volunteers of the Month!

Joe and Lisa began volunteering with us back in 2020, starting with an emergency food box site in McGavock during the pandemic. What started as one shift turned into a lasting commitment: they soon joined a group of "Regulars" on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and today they've logged more than 2,400 combined volunteer hours.

Beyond their regular shifts, Joe and Lisa serve as Volunteer Leaders, helping train and guide new volunteers through our warehouse projects, and they lend a hand with food rescue, corporate packing events, and food distributions across the community. In Lisa's words: "It just really feels good knowing how much we're able to help."

When Kelly knows a Mobile Market is coming, she can't afford to miss it.

"I'll come out here every time a food truck comes," she said, "and I get as much as I can for my kids."

Providing for a household of five is, as she put it, "very challenging." Some days are good. Others turn into a waiting period. "I have to wait for my food stamps to come so I can have food in my house," she said. "Sometimes that lasts, but not all the time."

Kelly gets by on a combination of SNAP and social security. Together, they help. But help and enough are not the same thing.

For millions of Americans, SNAP and SSI provide a foundation, not a full month of meals. Benefits are calculated to cover only part of what a household actually needs, and for a family of five, the shortfall can add up fast. The gap widens in the days before benefits reload, when the shelves at home are already bare. Kelly lives in that gap. She's done the math, stretched the dollars, and still finds herself waiting for help.

That's exactly where Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee steps in. The Mobile Market that visits her neighborhood doesn't replace Kelly's benefits. It bridges the gap between them, filling the table on the days when there's nothing left to stretch.

Every year, Feeding America releases Map the Meal Gap, a nationwide study that helps us better understand food insecurity in our community. This year's numbers show the true impact of food insecurity throughout Middle and West Tennessee. Additionally, United For ALICE data shows us the financial hardships our neighbors face.

Behind every number on these pages is a neighbor: a child, an older adult, a parent working hard to make ends meet. These numbers are a call to action, showing us where the need is greatest and reminding us why this work can't wait.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee operates school food pantries throughout our 46-county service area. These school-based pantries have a permanent residence within a school, where food is distributed to children and their families as needed. They help address a critical gap, since without access to school breakfast and lunch, many children experience higher food insecurity outside the regular school year, and these programs make sure they receive nutritious meals. By meeting kids where they already are, Second Harvest is able to reach families living with food insecurity and give students the support they need to focus, stay healthy, and succeed in school.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and News 2 WKRN-TV are joining forces once again for the News 2 Food 2 Families School Food Drive!

When the school year starts, children living with food insecurity have already fallen behind their classmates. They're more likely to struggle concentrating in class, get sick more often, and have a harder time excelling academically.

Last year, 30 local schools joined together to help change that, providing more than 200,000 meals to neighbors in need. We're hoping for an even bigger impact this year!

Across Middle Tennessee, many older adults are forced to choose between paying for food, medicine, and other essentials, often on a fixed income that just doesn't stretch far enough.

At Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, we're working to change that. Through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), income eligible older adults 60 and older receive a monthly food box, reaching nearly 2,000 neighbors each month. For older adults who can't leave home, we bring food directly to independent living facilities and homebound individuals across our service area.

Our Older Adult Nutrition Program extends that reach even further, providing prepackaged nourish boxes each month to seniors experiencing food insecurity across Middle and West Tennessee. Delivered in partnership with senior centers and Partner Agencies, the program also includes frozen tray packs and shelf-stable foods, helping ensure older adults have consistent access to the nutrition they need.

Through these programs, we are working to help nourish our older adult neighbors in Middle and West Tennessee.

Did you know a single visit to one of our Neighbor Care Pantries can provide more than food?

For neighbors facing a moment of urgent need, our Neighbor Care Pantry Program provides two to three days of staple food, sized to household need, through 5 Partner sites across Davidson County.

But it doesn't stop there. Neighbor Care Pantries also connect neighbors with healthcare, dental care, and diaper resources, all in one visit. It's one stop that can meet several needs at once, because having access to food makes everything else possible.
