BACK TO BASICS
We have so many issues facing us as a county, state and nation. But one of the things missing in all these places is accountability for how our money is being spent. It seems like we send people to represent us locally, statewide and nationally and all they seem to be focused on is how do we spend your money with little accountability.
My opinion is that we should have a better understanding of how money is spent and hey a novel idea, “balance the budget.” That used to be the mantra of one of the political parties, obviously not any more. The same principle exists for all levels of government. What comes in is the same or greater than what goes out of our money.
Let’s work locally then go from there. Here in Brown County let’s be sure of what we have to work with and in turn establish our list of priorities. If roads are more important than jobs or health care, so be it, but provide the people with an understanding of those priorities and make decisions based on them.
As for the state, oh my, they have a lot of money. But what are the priorities? It does not appear to be cleaning up our rivers and water since we are number 49 in the amount of contamination in our natural water systems. The people’s health is not a priority since they are cutting back on health care support for less fortunate people. It would be nice if we could submit referendums to let the people choose some of the priorities.
Now for the national scene. What can I say, war and helping the rich get richer seems to be front and center. I thought the president was clear that he did not want to get into any wars. He wanted the peace prize for settling wars not starting them. So our money is being spent on the military industrial complex. I guess we need to thank Todd Young, Jim Banks, and Erin Houchin for not checking to see what their constituents want. I know what I would tell them. Do you know what you want them to prioritize?
To close this, someone told me that we might solve the spending problem with a new rule. If at the end of the year the budget is not balanced and it is your year to be reelected that you would not be permitted to be on the ballot. That might make a difference. Here’s to a positive future.
