Kelly Bennett, Nevis Elementary Teacher:

“After moving to northern Minnesota last spring, I was fortunate to join the Nevis Elementary School staff as a first grade teacher this school year. I was blown away by how staff, students and families went out of their way to make me feel welcome in the community.

As someone who grew up and began my teaching career elsewhere, I can say confidently that Nevis is a special, tight-knit and supportive community unlike any other.

Nevis School is more than just a place of work. It is truly the heart of the community, where dedicated staff go above and beyond to provide the best possible education to our students. I adore my first grade class and feel incredibly privileged to be a part of their education.

I’m passionate about the potential of the upcoming referendum. As a young teacher, I am inspired by the impact this decision could have on our students, now and in the future.

Safety of our students is of the utmost importance. The proposed referendum will help ensure student safety with a new designated bus loop, secure entrances and updates to our mechanical and electrical systems.

The Nevis Forward plan would also add much-needed space and update our classrooms, learning areas, offices and outdoor spaces to ensure that all students have the space and resources necessary to succeed.

I urge district residents to make their voices heard on this important decision. The election is almost here, so please vote on or before Tuesday, April 8. Plan details, tax impact and voting information can be found at NevisForward.org.

As Facility Manager at Nevis School, I’m responsible for the buildings, grounds and mechanical systems. I work daily with many systems that are either antiquated or obsolete.

People don’t think about the heating or cooling in the building until it doesn’t work. One of my biggest struggles is that the equipment that I work with on a daily basis are parts of systems that are out of sight and not understood by many people. There isn’t anything glorious about installing a new air handling unit (AHU), roof top unit (RTU), boilers or building automation system.

Our systems are in need of upgrades that will cost several million dollars – yet walking into the building afterwards, it is likely that you won’t see the physical work that has been done because it is part of the building infrastructure.
Our school currently has nine AHU/RTU’s that are approaching 40 years old. Failure is going to happen at some point. Planned upgrades and improvements are a much better alternative than emergency repairs.

Our building currently has two low pressure steam boilers that run off of fuel oil that were installed in 1987. While we have had good luck with them, they are almost 10 years past their expected life span and not very efficient. Converting the building to a hot water system with condensing boilers, while a huge investment, would provide significant operating and efficiency savings.

Our current Johnson Controls building automation system (BAS) controls just over 50% of the square footage in the building. It is a Windows XP computer-based system that was installed in 1997 and last upgraded in the early 2000s.
Two summers ago, the power supply for it quit working and the only place we could find a replacement was eBay. Thankfully, it wasn’t something that didn’t need to be programmed because I was told by our service tech that the system was obsolete and they wouldn’t be able to help us.

We currently have about 100,000 square feet of building and for that square footage, we have four different BAS systems, which is a nightmare to manage.

The proposed $41.55-million referendum would address these infrastructure needs, and much more.

As retired and semi-retired residents of the Nevis School District, we see the importance of supporting education. Today, our grandchildren are students and young adults, and the world of education has changed dramatically. Fields like science, technology, industry and the arts, as well as safety and security needs, are all evolving rapidly.
Current enrollment of in-district and open enrolled students allows Nevis to provide a solid, balanced education, but more classrooms and additional space are urgently needed to support a diverse and modern curriculum.

Modern, progressive schools attract great teachers and encourage graduates to return to the community to work, start businesses, and raise their families. Additionally, good schools boost property values, which is important for all of us. As retirees, this is for our future too.
We know the cost of construction will never go down and will likely increase rather quickly. Now is the right time for this referendum.

We take pride in the achievements of Nevis students and join in celebrating their many accomplishments in academics, arts, athletics, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. We urge everyone to consider the positive impact a modern school will have on our entire community.

🏫 This is really exciting! The banner on the northwest side of the School shows how the proposed CTE (Career & Technical Education) space would be connected to the school so that our students can remain in the building and not have to walk through the parking lots to and from class. This space would be correctly sized per education standards.
🏫 The banner by the Tiger Arena indicates where the new classroom space, gathering area, and fitness center will be located, also adequately sized for our students and staff.
