Community activist John "Buddy" Andrade understands why many have been skeptical about the long-awaited local job boon expected to come along with the offshore wind industry's activity in the Whaling City. But now with Vineyard Wind set to take up temporary residence at New Bedford's Marine Commerce Terminal in January to begin creating the gargantuan-sized turbine blades for its wind farm, Andrade says locals looking for a career path cannot afford to doubt any longer.

There's been a lot of talk on offshore wind opportunities headed to New Bedford, so Wind Works organizers opted to try something different last week.

June 10 is Dia de Portugal, or Day of Portugal. Celebrated by members of the Portuguese community all over the world, it commemorates the death of Portugal’s epic poet Luís de Camões. He is the author of Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), an epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and the country’s role in the Age of Exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries. It’s often compared to works like the Aeneid or the Odyssey.

A look at some Portuguese restaurants from around the SouthCoast — in no particular order — where you can celebrate Day of Portugal with an epic meal.

On Sunday, June 24 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM, Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen 2018 Jordan St.Onge will host a family fun day at Livesey Park in Fairhaven. The money raised from the event will support The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Boston Children’s Hospital. The event will feature bouncy houses, pony rides, face painting, raffles and food as well as entertainment provided by Jordan, her friends and some of her “sister-queens” from both the teen and miss local pageant programs.

An Official Preliminary to Miss America's Outstanding Teen Pageant, the Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen pageant promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement. Jordan’s chosen community service platform is “Big Tobacco’s Final Hour” Lung Cancer Awareness and Prevention”. Miss St.Onge will be competing in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant next month in Orlando, Florida. She is a rising senior at Fairhaven High School and her talent for the pageant is a contemporary Irish Step Dance. She won the state title in April in New Bedford.

There will be two bouncy houses, a dunk tank, face painting and pony rides. Ice cream will be provided by Acushnet Creamery and there will be popcorn, cotton candy and other snacks for attendees. For more information and to purchase tickets, call Stephanie St.Onge at 508-269-8174 or go to the Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen page and tickets can be purchased through an Eventbrite link.
