THE NEW BEDFORD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION CONDEMNS HATRED
On behalf of all the residents of the City of New Bedford the Human Relations Commission expresses its profound sadness that, once again, members of a vulnerable community have been targeted with anger and hatred. The members of the Human Relations Commission each extend their sincerest sympathy to the families, friends and members of the Asian-American community who have been deeply affected by the tragic killing of innocent people in Atlanta, Georgia, and today, again more innocent lives in Boulder, Colorado.
Anger and hatred are the products of ignorance that is cultivated by the willful repetition of lies and disinformation. The Human Relations Commission reaffirms that we are all, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, gender, identity, persuasion or ability, members of the same human family and that we all have a right to live productive, fulfilling and happy lives on Earth, in this country and in this city in particular.
We call on all residents of New Bedford to reject hatred and anger, and not to turn against each other. Rather, we call on all residents to turn towards each other to learn from each other and to seek a better appreciation about how much we are alike, with similar dreams, hopes, wishes, cares, concerns and feelings for each other and our families. When there is understanding, there is no room for hate.
Two bills are proposed in the Massachusetts legislature to deal with hate crimes more equitably. We urge all citizens to read these pending bills and to contact their legislators to ask for their active support to sponsor and pass these bills urgently.
