What the #1 crash type is in Craven County?

If you said rear ends you would be correct.

Can you guess what the #1 reason is for this crash type is?

If you said failure to reduce speed you would be correct again!

What this means? This data shows an obvious correlation between rear ends and car speeds/following distance. Drivers are either speeding to fast to provide adequate time to slow down or following too closely for their speed to react in the time needed to safely slow down to the vehicle they impact.

Give everyone some space and grace today on the roads. We all have somewhere to be.

This data is based on all recorded crash types and violations in Craven County from July 2021 to July 2026.

The intersection of Hotel Drive and US17 BUS has a new reconfiguration as a thru cut intersection. Drivers can no longer go straight through the intersection from the Hotel Drive to Berne Square or leave Berne Square and go straight.

This change was done due to the high number of crashes caused by the thru lane conflicting with turning movements at this intersection. Pedestrian facilities are also being installed with a pedestrian refuge island and crosswalks.

School zones are designated areas where special traffic laws are in place to ensure the safety of students. Typical school zones may enforce reduced speed limits, extra road markings and potentially increased fines. It is important to be more aware when traveling in school zones due to the increased presence of pedestrians, slower moving traffic and school buses πŸŽπŸŽ’πŸŽ“πŸš
