FRAUD ALERT: EMPLOYMENT SCAMS

In 2025, U.S. employers laid off more than 1.17 million workers. Scammers have taken advantage of this fact by targeting job seekers with employment scams. Fraudsters create fake job advertisements on social media, online marketplaces, and job search websites. Some scammers also impersonate legitimate staffing agencies and companies with the same common goal: To obtain personal information and/or access to financial assets. For example: Scammers may falsely claim to represent a well-known company, such as Walmart, and direct applicants to a fraudulent website that appears legitimate.

To protect yourself and others from these scams, consider the following:

If an online advertisement promises unusually high pay for little work, it is most likely a scam.
DO NOT send money or pay any fee to apply for a job or an interview.
DO NOT provide your banking information, social security number, copies of government-issued identifications or other information before validating the source.
Be cautious of employers that offer you a job without conducting an interview.
Research the company independently and verify that the recruiter or hiring manager is affiliated with the organization by utilizing official contact information.
Even reputable job search websites like LinkedIn and Indeed can and do contain fraudulent job postings.

If you believe you have been targeted by an employment scam, stop communicating with the suspected scammer, preserve all emails, text messages, and job postings and report it to your local police department. You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and/or the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) https://www.ic3.gov.

Tonight, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is partnering with local law enforcement agencies throughout the county for a coordinated DWI enforcement initiative aimed at keeping our roads safe.

Officers will be actively patrolling for impaired drivers, enforcing traffic laws, and working to prevent crashes caused by alcohol and drug impairment.

Before you head out:
🚗 Designate a sober driver.
📱 Use a rideshare or taxi.
🔑 Never get behind the wheel if you’re impaired.
🛑 Buckle up and encourage your passengers to do the same.

Every impaired driving crash is preventable. Help us protect our communities by making responsible choices and ensuring everyone gets home safely.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

FRAUD ALERT: SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM

There have been recent reports within Middlesex County and nationwide regarding scams targeting residents receiving Social Security Benefits. The scammers send unsolicited text messages, emails or phone calls advising customers that there is an update to their benefits or they have a statement available. Many times, links to websites will have subtle typos or misspellings.

SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM:

• Scammers are sending emails advising the recipient that there is an important update to their Social Security benefits.

• The sender will often have some personal identifying information (i.e., date of birth) which will be accurate and the email will contain a link opening a website.

• The website, however, is NOT associated with the Social Security Administration. It will attempt to get the recipient to enter confidential information (i.e., a social security number or bank account).

• From there, scammers use the personal information to steal victim’s funds and/or open credit cards or accounts in their name.

TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS FROM THESE SCAMS, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

• Only open email attachments that come from a trusted source and are expected.

• DO NOT click on email links or use contact information from the email. Instead, go directly to the website (www.ssa.gov) and use the contact information posted there.

• NEVER provide personal information such as date of birth or social security number via a link in an email.

• DO NOT provide account login information to an untrusted source.

• ENABLE two-step verification whenever available

• DO NOT share account activity – Do not share activity or financial account information.

• REPORT the email as junk or spam and/or delete it.

On Friday, June 5th, officers from agencies across Middlesex County will proudly participate in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey. The “Flame of Hope” will make its way through our communities as law enforcement officers run together in support of the incredible athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey.

The torch will be passed from department to department along the route as it continues its journey across the state toward the opening ceremonies at The College of New Jersey. We encourage community members to come out, cheer on the runners, and show their support for this inspiring tradition that unites law enforcement and our communities for such an important cause.
