Capt. Joshua D. Dandridge decided at age 11 that he wanted to serve “something bigger than himself.”

“I just always felt called to the field of service,” the logistics officer said. “I wanted to be a member of a team … and that’s just where I found it, with the Army.”

Dandridge said his family is intimately connected to military service and war. His grandfather, Billy Rae Stacks, is a retired Army field artilleryman who served two tours in the Vietnam War, and his grandmother, Joanne Stacks, is a refugee of the Korean War who survived North Korean hostility. Additionally, his father, Buck Enfinger, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom after 9/11, and ultimately retired from the South Carolina National Guard.

“That also inspired me to serve and stand up for what is right against those who would seek to oppress others,” he said.

“The Army just opened up so many doors that I would have never been able to [go through] had I not been in the military,” the logistics officers said. “It’s been one door after another, and I keep walking through them."

Colin Luther Powell was born in Harlem, New York City, on 5 April 1937, the son of Jamaican immigrants.

By his own admission, he was an average student with no clear career plans after high school. But he joined the Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) while attending the City College of New York and found his calling.

"I not only liked it," Powell later said, "but I was pretty good at it."

Powell served 2 decorated tours in Vietnam and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as the national security adviser, and in 1989, at age 52, was the youngest officer to hold the post of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest position in the Department of Defense. Powell was also appointed as the secretary of state in 2000.

Gen. Powell served for 35 years with honor and integrity and exemplified leadership. His #ArmyCareer is one for the ages, and a true example of where hard work and dedication can take you.

#MeetyourArmy -- Pfc. Malik Scott is a Patriot launching station operator assigned to 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery.

“Personally, I can’t sit behind a desk,” Scott said. “I’m a crew member on a launching station, so I set up the launcher and make sure everything is running smoothly. It keeps me on my feet and it’s a fun time.”

His father served in the Army and grandfather served in the Air Force, which motivated him to serve also.

Scott has been part of the #ArmyTeam for less than a year, but he already knows he wants to make the Army a career and use all the benefits of enlistment to better himself.

My Army Story - Loaiza - Long - Final.mp4

Great story about Staff Sgt. David Loaiza who immigrated to New York City from the Republic of Columbia at age 16 in late 2000. When the twin towers fell on 9/11 in the city that had become his home, he was inspired to find a way to give back to the United States.

Now he's back in New York City inspiring others to serve alongside him in the #USArmy. And in his time off, he dons another uniform as a member of the New York Police Department’s volunteer auxiliary force.

#Soldiers are #AlwaysReady -- a quick-thinking #ArmyReserve Soldier helped put out a fire at Ronald Regan Washington National Airport after just returning from a deployment to Africa.

Sgt. 1st Class Brett Johnson, a firefighter from Lynn, Massachusetts, smelled smoke while traveling through the airport to catch his next flight and went to investigate. He found an electric scooter was on fire, and several people were gathering nearby.

“People were standing around not knowing what to,” said Johnson. “I told everyone to move away.”

Then Johnson found a fire extinguisher nearby and emptied it on the scooter. Airport security thanked him for his efforts, but short on time, Johnson quickly moved on to his next mission of catching his flight to Fort Hood.

When asked about dousing the flames, Johnson said, “I saw something that needed to be done and did it."

Johnson is a civil affairs soldier with Company A, 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion, and was deployed in support of Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa.
