Must have a high school diploma/GED and a 75-hour Nurse Aide Certificate is required. Aides assist clients with personal cares, housekeeping, laundry, meal prep, etc. No weekends or holidays. Lutheran Services in Iowa will be hosting a Community Baby Shower on June 18th from 4-6pm at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. This event will be for moms-to-be or those that just gave birth.

Chickasaw County Public Health is excited to join a statewide effort to combat cancer and improve access to health care across Iowa.

Through a grant awarded to Marion County Public Health, 67 local public health agencies have partnered together to address cancer prevention, early detection, and health equity. This initiative will focus on reducing the impact of cancers such as skin cancer and lung cancer while helping improve access to health care services for Iowans.

As part of this partnership, Chickasaw County Public Health will serve both Chickasaw County and Howard County, working to bring education, resources, and prevention efforts to our communities.

Heart attack awareness and recognizing the warning signs:

Sometimes, even when we take steps to prevent heart attacks—such as quitting smoking, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet—heart attacks can still happen. This is why it is so important to recognize the signs of a heart attack.

Heart attacks happen when a blocked artery cuts off some of the blood supply to the heart. This can damage the heart tissue and can be life threatening.

Sometimes the warning signs are clear, such as chest pain or a squeezing sensation in the chest, typically in the center or left side. This discomfort may be constant or may come and go, and it can also be accompanied by shortness of breath. Pain isn’t always limited to the chest—it can radiate to the arms, shoulders, back, or even the jaw. Other symptoms that you may have but not immediately think it could be a heart attack could be dizziness, lightheadedness, indigestion, nausea, or extreme fatigue.

Sometimes we think if we just lay down, we might feel better but it is important if you experience any of these warning signs, to seek medical attention immediately before it is too late.

What happens with Multiple Sclerosis is the protective coating that is around the nerves are damaged. This would be like if we have an electrical wire and the protective coating that is around those wires are coming off and effecting the messages to our brain and the rest of the body which normally tells us what to do. When this is damaged it can disrupt that communication. Today more than 2.8 million people around the world have MS. After speaking with one of our nurses about her mom’s experience with MS, I was reminded that multiple sclerosis is often called an “invisible disease.” Many people with MS may appear fine on the outside, while quietly struggling with challenges others cannot see, such as brain fog, fatigue, numbness, and fine motor difficulties. There is no cure for MS and it may be invisible to the eye at times, but greater awareness and compassion can help bring awareness to others.

Today is Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Ponctata (RCDP) awareness day. RCDP, is an extremely rare genetic form of dwarfism that affects both physical and cognitive development, with fewer than 100 living children worldwide believed to have the condition. RCDP is inherited genetically, and for parents who both carry the gene mutation, there is a 1 in 4 — or 25% — chance with every pregnancy that their child will be affected. We want to give a shout out to our community friend Miss Cece who we also featured in February as a rare disease spotlight for RCDP. Her mom Megan shared during that time that while the diagnosis comes with unimaginable challenges, it has also shown us the strength, love, and resilience that can grow within a family and community facing something so rare. They will be having a first annual 3K for Cece which will be held on RCDP day which is May 31st at Highland Park Trail in Lawler. The race will start at 5 pm with check-in at 4 pm with a free will donation meal afterwards. For more information there is a Facebook Event it is 3 for C.

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CDLS) is a rare genetic condition that affects about 1 in 10,000 births, with only 27 reported cases in Iowa. CDLS can impact each individual differently and is often characterized by distinct facial features, growth restriction, developmental delays, behavioral challenges, gastrointestinal issues, hearing loss, heart defects, and upper limb differences. Some individuals may also display autism-like behaviors or self-injury tendencies. While there is currently no cure, treatment focuses on supportive care through therapies, medical monitoring, and educational support.

We want to give a shout out to our community friend Miss Violet. We featured her in February as a rare disease spotlight for CDLS. I am going to quote and re-emphasize what her mom Liz shared. She said one thing that is important for people understand with CDLS or many other syndromes is that it is only one part of who they are. They understand far more than they can sometimes express. Speech delay or being nonverbal does not mean lack of understanding. They might not always respond verbally, but they are listening and learning every single day. They are full of personality, determination, and joy, and if you pay attention, they can teach you a great deal about life.
