Years before the thirteen colonies declared independence, the people of New Orleans rose up, threw out their new governor, and briefly ran themselves free of a European crown. ⚜️

The trouble began in 1762, when France secretly handed Louisiana to Spain. The French Creoles of New Orleans, proud of their language, their laws, and their identity, were not consulted and did not take it well. When the first Spanish governor, Antonio de Ulloa, arrived and began tightening trade rules that threatened the colony's livelihood, resentment boiled over.

In the autumn of 1768, the planters and merchants of New Orleans, joined by German and Acadian settlers, forced Ulloa onto a ship and expelled him from the colony. For a brief, heady moment, Louisiana governed itself, and some of its leaders spoke openly of liberty and of a Louisiana ruled by its own people. It was one of the earliest revolts against European authority anywhere in the Americas. 🌿

But the reckoning came. In 1769 Spain sent General Alejandro O'Reilly with a powerful fleet and thousands of soldiers. He retook the colony without a fight, then arrested the ringleaders. Five of them were executed by firing squad, and others were imprisoned. Louisiana remembered them as martyrs, among the first men on this continent to die for the idea of self rule.

O'Reilly went on to reorganize the colony under firm Spanish law, and the rebellion was crushed. Yet the spirit of it lingered. New Orleans had shown, early and unmistakably, that it would not be handed from king to king without a word.

Long before Lexington and Concord, there were men in New Orleans willing to stand against an empire and pay for it with their lives. It is a piece of Louisiana history that deserves to be spoken with pride. 🕯️
